Shanghai Fresh, Central Sq Cambridge MA

Although I’ve eaten here several times in the past, I’ve never posted about it. Now’s the time, especially after I’ve just recommended it to @digga on another thread. I had food delivered from them today. It was a mixed bag.

The mapo tofu with fish was excellent, with the satisfying crunch-and-tingle of Sichuan peppercorn in every bite, but the fish (6 small pieces) was in short supply. The pork belly with tofu skin knots was somewhat sweet and uni-dimensional, but the knots were terrific. There was not a knot in the bunch that was a nought. (Sorry, I’m weak.) They knots were chewy and were clearly intended to provide a textural contrast to the pork belly. It would have worked better had the belly been more unctuous and meltingly soft.

The scallion noodles were terrific, coated with nicely charred scallions, but the Shanghai fried noodles with beef were only mildly good this time.

Been twice for lunch and I like this place. I enjoyed the fish with wine sauce and winter melon soup but found the Lions head too salty. I didn’t know they were related to Shanghai Gate that i liked but didn’t get to much
when it was open.
