Sf Bay Area 23-24 Dungeness crab season! Time for the delay!

Looks like a new shipment arrived. The tanks were stuffed. The guy brought out two big ones at the customer’s request.

Today at Shun Fat Supermarket in Stockton: $5.99/lb. Looked like mostly on the sub-2Lb side. There are way fewer crabs in the tank than there were four days ago. They were really lively last week, a little less so today.

$3.99 a pound at Sun’s Market in Millbrae but most have claws and/or legs missing (hence the price per the fishmonger there).

Total for two crabs was 3.76 pounds.

Late on the discussion here…jealous of your Dungie prices (we’re in NW Rockies). February 8, $6.99/lb, $25+ for 2 good sized crabs. Made 8 hot crab openfaced sammies. Wish we had real sourdough, tho.

At At Manila Oriental Market in Daly City. Lots of live crab available at $5.69 a pound. Dead ones were $3.99 a pound.

I think the Bay Area crab season is winding down since prices are rising a bit, and the crabs look smaller. Got a couple yesterday at Green Fish Seafood Market, $6.99/lb, about 1.5 lb.

In July!

Those are prob from other states.

Oops! I meant August. I didn’t realize they were caught commercially anywhere in August!

ETA Apparently it’s through September in Washington.

Saw on the news the other day that domoic acid was causing health problems in marine mammals on the California coast. Isn’t domoic acid what has delayed the start of crab season in recent years?

Sounds familiar. I haven’t started obsessing about Dungeness season just yet.

Yes domoic acid, from algae bloom and warm ocean temps, is the culprit.

I think dungeness crab season in Alaska is year round…colder water.

Sorry about the thread hijack, but…

I’ve been reading the last few weeks that east coast blue crabs are now a pestilence in the northern Adriatic, from Venice down to croatia. This may bear investigation. Any leads on restaurants and areas featuring Blue Crabs in the Adriatic (I’ve seen reports in Science, etc, now looking for active restaurants), would be appreciated.

It’s about shifts in crab locations and impact on culinary outcomes…

Yes! It almost nixed a whole Season with in recent memory 2015 I think.
