The kitchen knife is magnetically held on to the stand at a specific angle, and the sharpener is a sharpening disc attached to a rolling tool - almost like a short rolling pin They look easy enough to use (fix knife angle, and a natural rolling motion).
I believe HORL is the original designer, and many others are more of followers after HORL, They are not cheap. The HORL ranged from $190 to $430.
A Tumbler is about $100. Rolling Stone is also about $120
There are cheaper version of <$50.
There are some good reviews, but also some skepticisms and complaints. For example, they tend to have challenge to sharpen very small or tall (wide blade) knives like a Chinese style chef knife.
While I applaud the designer for a fine new idea and the maker for an attractive product, stones can be inexpensive, leaving a fair sized chunk of change for other things.
Yes, h bought Horl a few years ago, and is happy with it, easy to use. i have bought stones, but ever since he got Horl, rarely use stones any more. (I dislike the sensation of grinding metal, so I’m glad he is taking over the job.)
Nice. I heard the imitators are cheaper, but not as good. Glad your family likes the Horl. “I dislike the sensation of grinding metal” – really? Like scratching chalkboard with your fingernails?
