We went once to Rhum Corner, within a year or two of it opening, and then never made it back again. We enjoyed it, but didn’t find it quite special enough to prioritize for repeat visits. However, with Jen Agg’s recent message about having to potentially close (due to rising rent and not being busy enough during the week), we decided to make a return visit.
We walked in on a Wednesday night at about 7:30. Two tables were free and there was lots of space at the bar. We started with a couple of fun cocktails: Painkiller #3 (a coconut punch) and Wray and Ting (rum and the classic soda).
We were hoping to try the Haitian spaghetti, but they were out. So we first went with the albacore tuna ceviche, which had fresh tangy chunks with lots of onions, jicama cubes, and grape tomatoes, served with crisp, fried plantain discs.
We enjoyed the griot last time and ordered it again. It features deep fried chunks of pork, with more plantain, green peppers, and a dark umami-rich sauce.
We tried the Haitian fried chicken - a very dark, almost burnt coating, nice moist meat, with honey beside.
And we also had the legumes and beef - tender chunks of braised beef, carrots, onions, with rice and a peppery gravy.
All in all, quite good. Maybe still not special enough to be a high priority for us, but a nice change from the other restaurants in the area
