This looks like Vava Designer Cakes that just opened downtown on Yonge just north of Wellesley. They have other stores in North York and Richmond Hill but only the new downtown location has gelato.

We tried one of their $28 Chiffon cake. It’s wrapped in a plastic film on the side. Once you remove the film, the creme on top is so soft that it flows down and the cake loses it’s integrity, kind of messy, so it’s the plastic film that holds the cake together! But for what it’s worth, it tasted good.

Thanks I tried their gelato nearby (might have forgotten to mention the name) I see their cakes doing well for certain palates

We tried their cake at the North York location. We thought it was quite expensive and I think the price left a bad taste in my mouth  Haven’t tried the gelato yet though.

EUREKA!!!
After a few disappointing searches and results, found this rated 7-8/10 ( in terms of authenticity and taste), freshly made, Viennese Apple Strudel at ’ Yummy Market, Vaughan ’ Deli section…cut to order from foot long log! About $8 for a 4 inch thick slice.:yum::grin::+1:

Was at yorkdale Mall so had to pass by Laduree
Saw the Pavlova so had to pick it up
Hmmm not as expected as small portion and I would rather shell out more and grab it from Roselle (can be a crowd pleasar) this one didn’t hit both the requirement for Pavlova imo lots of berries and soft pillow like meringue

Wow!! You really love Laduree products my chow-friend!
Maybe one day, we’ll meet up and do a combined Costco and Dessert crawl?! :joy:

Follow up: according to the folks at Vava, the other locations will soon be selling gelato as well.

You don’t enjoy any cakes? What about Tortes? Or Poundcakes? Sponge Cakes? Financiers? Madeleines?

In the English- speaking world, cakes seem to include Tortes as well as Kuchen, which would be considered 2 distinct types of desserts in the German, Hungarian and Slavic world.

A layer cake is closer to a torte in my mind.

I’m surprised you don’t like cake in general, because you enjoy other desserts so much.

That said, I don’t enjoy croissants, so I can understand not enjoying an entire type or class of baked good.

I still haven’t tried anything from Butter Baker.

As cakes go, the cakes I like would be cakes from Thobors.

" JW Patisserie, 9140 Leslie St., Richmond Hill " - Another expensive, disappointing and over-rated experience…vow not to return again!!

First off…JW?! Nope, it does not stand for Jehovah Witnesses but instead Janice Wong, the pastry chef owner!😂

My first visit to this neighborhood pastry shop and cafe was quite a few years ago when I found the higher-than-norm pricing products too sweet for my liking and hence have not returned since!

Recently, a third party foodie told me JW now offers a great tasting ‘Chestnut cake’…my wife’s favorite! So, I paid it another visit in the hope of trying one. Sadly, the cake needs to be pre-ordered and cost $60 (cash)/$68 ( credit card ) for a 7" diameter one! ( some decent ones I’ve encountered elsewhere were only around $38 for a 6" one! Looks like their exorbitant pricing trend still carries on after all these years! )
Since I already set foot inside the store, I decided to pick up an " Earl Grey Mousse, Mandarin Gelee and Chocolate sponge cake " from the sparse display units…BIG MISTAKE!
With no displayed pricing, I was stunned to see this stingy size cake ( 2.5 " diameter plus 1.5" high ) costs me a whopping $11.65!! I would have rejected it if it wasn’t for the fact the sales lady already packed it in a container.
Tasting it at home yielded another unimpressive result. A typical, run-of-the-mill, uninspiring, mousse and jelly product with a ho-hum looking appearance. Taste and look definitely does not commensurate with the high price they are charging!
Note also that, two ‘way more superb’ patisseries…DUO and Ruelo are just a short drive down the road!!
Caveat Emptor!

Picked up the tiramisu from David rocco (had to contact their insta account as it was never available to order otherwise)
Decent (way better than butter baker imo) as seems to made fresh (daily according to the staff) so add to the their gelato offering I think one of the better spots for desserts in Yorkville (Cafe boulud still being the best imo) priced and portion are similar to eataly if one needs a reference point

Have you tried the Eataly tiramisu? I think it is pretty good.

Yes a few times. I think this is better

A one-off thing!!
Hands down BEST tasting if not MOST EXOTIC AND EXTRAVAGANT Tiramisu I have ever tasted was the one made by a sadly deceased friend a few years back. She used Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and added a few splashes of her husband’s priced Louis XIII Cognac with the Amaretto!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :yum:

Hmm OK I make a decent version as well. Not sure that show is accessible but it had a few good recipes. Tyler Ultimate and it takes roughly two hours to whip this up so definitely not a pick me up (pun intended)
I tend to make it once a year as to not forget the recipe

With not much open today. Decided to visit the Paris Baguette spot that opened up recently in Yorkville. Don’t have a reference but it was very busy. Cakes are pricey will try soon. Meanwhile here are some pics

Had some guests coming over so ended up ordering a whole apricot crostata from Forno Cultura. Glorious I forget how good this place as don’t venture out to this area much. I think it will do well.
