Random eats [Waltham, Westminster, New Bedford MA; East Providence RI]

Dear GBA Onions—I can’t quit you guys! And you’ll be sorry that I’m back because all I got is basically more pub grub and pizza. These are all from the not-so-distant past, but even still, details are fuzzy.

One Saturday, we went to Mass Destruction at the Charles River Industry Museum which was a hoot. Spring Onion is now inspired to enter a robot combatant next year! We saw this interesting display at the museum—a local company that recycles disposable chopsticks and turns them into cutting boards, coasters. Sadly, they’re not sold at the museum but we found some by chance afterwards at More than Words bookstore so I got what was left (a small cheese board-sized one).

We grabbed lunch at the “new” Deep Ellum on Moody (it’s been in its new home for 1.5 years!). We were big fans of the Allston location and not sure why we hadn’t visited. And we liked the Gaff, the previous tenant. In any case, we had an awesome lunch. My broccoli reuben (I’ve never had a reuben, vegetarian or otherwise) was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. Spring Onion loved his brat sandwich (advertised as Karl’s but because they shuttered, not sure of the provenance and forgot to ask – they were slammed). I forget what B had but he liked it! Service was impeccable. We knew owners Aaron and Max at one point in our lives (they weren’t there)…glad to see that they are still providing great food and hospitality.

Late lunch/early dinner one Sunday after skiing at Wachusett at Wachusett Brewing Company because every thing at the mountain was packed to the brim. Space is a little odd, but we had a decent time. Had a mushroom pizza and the guys had burgers. We also brought home some peanut butter at the Red Apple Farm stand inside the ski lodge.

For Lunar New Year, dduk guk with beef and kimchi for B and Spring Onion (no kimchi for him) and for me, random veggie plate in addition to veggie dduk guk.

Fun, unpretentious dinner at Town Pizza in Riverside RI with mom and dad. Salmon, bacon cheeseburger, the everything pizza, and red clam sauce pizza. Cheap beer and wine and friendly service.

Birthday lunch for my mom at Cisco Brewers in New Bedford (in tandem with a visit to the Whaling Museum afterwards). Great space (we visited once last summer when it was too packed), friendly service. Spring Onion and I split a sushi platter, chicken pot pie for mom, fish and chips for dad, Korean fried chicken sandwich for B. Surfer’s brownie dessert thing-y afterwards. We waddled out, happy.

Decent Sicilian pizza from a neighborhood place, Fiesta Bites. We don’t see much traffic there so we are trying to support them as much as possible but there only so much pizza a family of 3 can eat!

Random food-related things, including a new favorite chilled red wine and a pizza box hat for his school’s “silly hat day.”

And guess what? I am writing this from Satellite Beach, FL! I am officially losing my mind this year and we decided to take the Florida plunge for February break (we aren’t a Disney family). We just arrived and I’ll report on the appropriate board. These first-timers are totally clueless about what lies ahead of us so B and I are a bit scared. We’ll start with Kennedy Space Center and move onto the theme parks and hope for the best!

Spring Onion is rocking that hat! Have fun in FL. Body and mind deserve a break.

Broccoli Reuben is genius! Enjoy the sun, another storm on the way, you got out just in time!

Ha, I thought the same when I read Digga’s report. Mind meld.

Yay! You’re back!

Deep Ellum has been growing on us. We were early adopters and steady patrons of The Gaff, so while Deep Ellum is perfectly lovely, we always get that “It’s Not The Gaff” vibe. However, when we recently stopped in for a weekday day lunch and decompress (we’d just moved mom to a local nursing facility and it had been a day!), I really enjoyed the maple wings and the white bean crostini with an Etna Rosso. Good stuff!

Agreed! At least it’s on a holiday weekend when we can just hunker down.

Your eats look fabulous, @digga. Enjoy the sunshine and warm temps!

Maybe when it gets warmer the peeps from the Greater Boston board need a meetup at Deep Ellum, if there would be interest. Something to mull over for when we are no longer buried in snow.

Nice to see you back, thanks for your report. I’ll look forward to reading about your Florida adventures. I’ve never been to Florida, never been tempted, even less so now; however I am curious! I hope it’s better than your Myrtle Beach trip in terms of food and experiences.

I desperately need a change of scene…hoping for the Cape and/or RI since I love northern beaches in winter. I’ll be searching your past reports for those areas. I am really an outlier…having grown up in North Carolina, cold and snow remind me I’m not longer there, which is good, and I am actually glad for some snow this winter after not much the last several. I know I sound crazy…!

Love your son’s hat! Where did you get it? It goes so well with the amazing tee shirt!

We spend every spring break in Melbourne. Make sure to get some rock shrimp & enjoy the other fresh local seafood. Cape Canaveral might be interesting; can’t say anything about the theme parks.

An airboat ride might be fun, too — Spring Onion might enjoy seeing all the gators.

Thanks for the report! Parsnipity family is also headed to Florida- I swear we live parallel lives! We’re doing 3 nights in South Beach Miami, though, so no theme parks and hopefully we can track down some good food? I perused the appropriate board but it’s pretty sparse. Eater has some tips we’ll use.

We’re meeting friends whom we miss dearly as they decamped from Somerville for the only academia jobs they could score at the same university in Miami a while back. In trying to meet up, I assumed they had Monday off, which those of us in Massachusetts know as Presidents’ Day. Texting with my now-abashedly-Floridian friend she informed me they were working and at school and said “nope, there’s only one president celebrated here.” I got a good laugh, but whew. Wish us luck.

We made it from an old pizza box and a printed-out photo. I art directed (ie, came up with the concept and bossed everyone else), B executed, and SO modeled.

Interesting. We just had an interaction with a friendly ex-pat couple (NJ and SD) who are now locals (for 15 years) at an outdoor bar and I mentioned something about the holiday weekend and the guy was like, what holiday? In my mind, I thought, wha?

We do live parallel lives and some day soon again, we will hopefully intersect. Have fun in the sun!

Wow, is this a 3 d printer?

I moved back to Massachusetts in 1989 (lived here before that for college, before college lived in NC, after college lived in Northern Calif and Spain). I knew about the legal holiday Presidents Day, but didn’t get the Mass. school vacation weeks in Feb. beginning Presidents Day and in April beginning Patriots Day until I was clued in by co workers/friends with school aged kids.

Other states don’t have state holidays for what’s considered the “minor” federal holidays. And as I’m working with local Boston-area agencies for services for our son, several are explaining that don’t have Presidents day off. I’m surprised, because the academic institutions my husband and I worked for Boston area always had all the federal holidays off.

@Parsnipity my husband and I recently were in South Beach for three nights and I think I posted a brief report on the appropriate board. Hope you enjoy your trip there.

Thank you! Just searched your post down via google. Searching through this site sometimes fails and I had missed it. In return and as part of searching, I saw you were looking for Azores recommendations, and having been to Sao Miguel 6 times now since 2017, 5 of them with kids, I am happy to answer any questions!

Oh great! And yes I will definitely pick your brain on the Azores if you don’t mind! Thanks!!

Apologies @ieatalotoficecream. I didn’t follow up on our DM thread (I’ll do that now)…got caught up in schtuff. You’re in good hands with @Parsnipity. I don’t think I can contribute much more color commentary.

A bit late to the thread. Just boarding our delayed flight from MIA to BOS wrapping up a long weekend. A couple of South Beach recs, and one to avoid (for now).

Matador Room in The Edition is a Vongrichten joint and the food is fabulous. Lunch on the terrace highly recommend.

Big Pink is a stalwart. Eclectic all day menu, not haute cuisine but what they do they do well. Service is efficient, unlike many places in South Beach.

My brother who lives South of Fifth hasn’t outgrown his steak and potatoes predilection (Ohio) and insisted we lunch at the new outpost of La Grande Boucherie. Lovely restored art deco building (you may recall it was once home to the Barbizon modeling agency) but service was horrible, mostly due to kitchen backup. They only opened a couple of weeks ago so I’d advise giving them a couple of months to work out the kinks. But it’s a lovely space and the foie gras torching was excellent and available as a 1st course ($4 supplement) on the very reasonably priced prix fixe lunch menu.

It’s also worth pointing out that Deep Ellum on Moody has a short but extremely well-curated draft list, much like the Gaff did.
