I’m not surprised that the NJ folks didn’t “remember” the holiday. Some NJ school districts have a winter break the week before Presidents’ Day and go back to school on the actual holiday. Then there’s spring break around Easter which may be the week before or the week after.
And NEVER go to FL the first Thursday and Friday in November. It is the annual teacher’s convention. Schools are closed and depending upon where in the lifecycle you are, about half the state heads south and the other half goes on college tours
Sounds especially appealing now as I spread sand on my driveway so it’s navigable. We were away during the most recent storm and returned to an ice-encrusted driveway that will stay that way until we hit a couple of 50-degree days in a row.
I feel your pain. It’s been a skating rink out there. On the other hand, I have no need for a gym because of the ice-chipping and shoveling I have been doing. Bring on the thaw!
I hope the thaw that you and @MaxEntropy want comes soon! I’ll be up in your area next week and hate the cold. It looks like daytime temps will be in the 40’s. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
What’s happening at our house in Somerville near the Boston line is that the ice has melted and the water is draining off, so we aren’t getting a new layer of ice at night. We still have a big pile of snow in the tiny front yard of our densely populated area of Somerville, but finally most of the curbs to get to the sidewalks are clear of ice and snow. We’ve been at this location since 2002 so we are familiar with the pattern.
I am acutely aware of it because I have two hip replacements and one half-replaced knee. I finally feel safe walking on most sidewalks and curbs; some spots are still encased but I can easily avoid them to get where I’m going. That’s progress! I’m talking about various locations in Somerville and Cambridge; don’t have personal experience of other areas.
Thank you all for the weather reports. I had an assortment of layering cloths which worked out well. There was more snow on the ground than I expected - we haven’t had any last more than 24 hours at all this winter.
To keep on the topic of random eats - we did takeout from Dakzen in Somerville. On Wednesday, we were able to snag two seats at the bar at Sarma, also in Somerville, with less than a 10 minute wait. One night I had dinner with my mother at her senior community dining room.
My sister has wanted to take me there for ages but we never had the time. For this visit, we made a point of getting there. I thought it was some of the best food I’ve had. The only downside was it was just the two us eating - we really wish there were more people so we could try more food.
I’m glad you got to Sarma! We last experienced Sarma with take out during the pandemic and I’ve been really wanting to go soon. So you got in as walk-ins at the bar? What time and day did you arrive…I probably won’t get it together to make a reservation.
I hope the rest of your visit was good. Despite a few days of sun and warmer temps, we still have small piles of snow in our front and back yards in Somerville. Now in a brief return to deep freeze last few days, warmer tomorrow!
We got there at about 6:15-6:20 on a Wednesday. I think we lucked out on the timing so that the folks who sat down when they opened at 5 were finishing up when we got there.
I live very close to the ocean and it is often a few degrees warmer than surrounding area. I remember once going to pickup The Sprout from school and it was raining at our house and snowing at school which was only about 2 miles away. I’s not a snow fan so am happy about that.
I did have to drive over a little snow bank when going in and out my sister’s driveway in Arlington (on the side closer to Somerville).
