Pepperkakebyen - World's Largest Gingerbread City, Bergen, Norway

Wasn’t quite sure where to put this, but it’s Holiday, AND it’s Baking, so I figured this would be a good place to leave a link for an enjoyable read and viewing of a video.

I recently read a book that had a (pastry chef) character creating a gingerbread village. So of course, I wanted to see what was “out there” on the Interwebs, and found this article about Pepperkakebyen in Bergen, Norway, the world’s largest (by area) Gingerbread city.

Started in 1991, it’s just gotten bigger and bigger, with SO many townspeople contributing to it, up to 2,000 gingerbread buildings as of this writing. It’s noted "All profits go to children’s charities, and there’s a gently competitive element but, as Steinar says, “the most important thing for us is to make a nice event in the pre-Christmas season.”

There’s ships; there is a zoo with elephants, people, a tram, a European football stadium, a Ferris Wheel, a castle with turrets…and while it’s not the largest edible gingerbread village/city (that belongs to NYC’s Gingerbread Lane), it is freaking amazing!

This YT video from 2025 shows the detail (long video!). Just amazing!

Here’s a shorter video (4 minutes) of 2022’s Pepperkakebyen that gives a good idea of the scope of the size!
