[Penang, Malaysia] Modern-Thai dinner at Kafka

6 years on, and having solidified its position as one of the top breakfast spots in Penang, Kafka now seeks to diversify its offerings - replacing its erstwhile all-day breakfast menu with a more ambitious, albeit occasional special dinner one.

We were back at Kafka last Saturday, to try out its first attempt - a collaborative effort with Chiang Mai-based guest chef, Phubase Chuprakong.

The special menu degustation actually tasted more fusion-Continental than Thai - very mild flavours, and hardly any heat from chilis typical of Thai cooking.

Our dinner consisted of:

  1. Prawn Crudo (Thai: กุ ้งแชนํ ้าปลา) - raw prawn infused in spicy-sour mint-pineapple-“nam pla” fermented fish sauce.

  1. Oyster O-Tao (Thai: โอต้าวหอยทอด) - deep-fried oyster, with grilled pork and O- Tao sauce.

  1. Foie Gras Kapi Waan (Thai: ฟัวกราส์ กะปิหวาน) - pan-seared foie gras, with mango and caramelised shrimp paste.

  1. Grilled squid Koong Sieb (Thai: หมึกย่าง นํ ้าพริกกุ ้งเสียบ) - grilled giant Andaman squid with dried shrimp relish.

  1. Grilled Moo Hong and rice (Thai: หมูฮ้องย่างกับ ข้าวต้มแห้ง) - Sino-Portuguese-style double-cooked pork-rib, served with golden-fried garlic rice porridge.

  1. Dessert: Ar-Pong & Mo kaeng (Thai: อาโป๊ง และ หม้อแกง) - Phuket-style pancake and spiced pudding, served with salted caramel ice-cream.

Very promising start to its new dinner venture. Certainly look forward to what’s to come!

Almost… kafkaesque … for a Thai meal

I’d miss the heat.

That looks and sounds like an amazing Meal.
Are those “sacs” of Finger lime with the Dried Shrimp Relish?
The Sauce/ Marinade with the Shrimp sounds right in my Wheel House.

No, those are pomelo sacs.
