[Penang, Malaysia] Afternoon tea at Orinea by Farquhar Mansion

Orinea by Farquhar Mansion’s Hot Air Balloon Cappadocia Grand High Tea Set is still pulling in the crowds after one year - no mean feat in George Town where the fickle dining crowd normally flocked to the latest new dining hotspot in town.

Whilst its parent restaurant, Farquhar Mansion at the 150-year-old Mission Place continues to undergo its long renovation project, 1-year-old Orinea’s nifty set-up, perched on the 18th floor of Sunshine Gurney, has continued to attract the young dining crowd. It’s an airy, spacious glass-curtained dining space, and one was lulled into a calm, languid mood as one looks out to the azure-blue waters of the Penang Straits outside.

The food offerings consisted of:
Fungi Forest puff pastry, with mushroom ragout & Hollandaisse sauce

Duck confit in choux pastry & cream

Mini-seafood patty burger with cheese and frisee

Seafood kataifi roll with Japanese mayo & dill

Miniature cream cheese log with coconut praline

Matcha Opera - with chocolate ganache, matcha cream and joconde

Almond Chocolate Hill - with caramel mousse, charcoal cream & Sable cookie

Lemon tart with passionfruit & mango compote

Valrhona chocolate mousse, with cherry & coffee fudge cake

The dainty pastries and cakes were nice, though I’d have preferred the more “traditional” offerings like scones with clotted cream & jam, or sandwiches, like those one gets at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel’s afternoon tea.

Looks like any apartment building from the outside. Fancy and the balloon is over the top but it’s only fitting.
