I was trying to watch that Tiger show on Nextflix everyone is talking about. 3 episodes in and I"m not sure I have enough vodka to make it through the series.
So agree with you @NotJrvedivici re: Tiger King. I insisted we turn it off during the middle of the 1st episode. Personally, there’s not enough liquor in the world for me to get through it…but I know lots of people love it, so to each their own. I did feel however that the documentary filmmaker was trying hard to present both sides of the issue pretty evenly.
That says a LOT.
A few friends have said I haaaaaaaaaave to watch it. I’m generally not a fan of reality shows (except for cooking, of course) so I haven’t started yet, but I’m sure I’ll end up watching at least a few of them. Now I know I’ll need a drink in hand to do so.
Great movie, but no A/C, since they were incorporating the noir element. (As I’m sure you know)! Quite David Lynch-ish.
I’ve been catching up with friends and family on the phone, mainly, FaceTime and texting. It’s a good distraction, and interesting to get 1st hand reports from different places.
There’s a definite triangular connection up here in the PNW, with both Hawai’i and Alaska. Although there are thousands of miles between the three states, they are kind of regarded as close by. I have multiple friend and family connections in both places, but will start with Hawai’i, as reported by a friend who spends half her time there.
Firstly, everyone flying into the islands are automatically quarantined for 14 days. The police are taking a hard line even with drivers looking at scenery, and issuing expensive tickets. All the beaches are closed, with the restrooms locked. You can probably take a little walk on the beach if you keep moving, but not even sure about that. Evidently, at the stores, zero paper products of any kind to be found, with shelves not being restocked. All dried pastas, boxed Mac n Cheeses and tomato products are completely gone as well. I’ll probably send my friend a care package soon. Their daughters have implored them to stay there until at least the end of May, since it’s probably safer there than here. That of course could even change.
As for Alaska, they are quarantining all incoming people also. Folks working on the North Slope are being isolated for 2 weeks before they can go to their respective job sites. I’m assuming they’re getting paid for their time, but will have to confirm. Food shortages haven’t been relayed to me, but no doubt the small villages are suffering, and the more outlying towns. Anchorage and Juneau probably in good shape.
In a different part of the country, a good friend is the president of a college, and has shut things down. Students are protesting the closure and parents are clamoring for refunds. In December, she was joking about retiring and working in her husband’s craft brewery, which of course is now closed, and only able to sell their canned beer. We plan on a virtual happy hour with them this weekend, so will get more details then.
Basically just reporting credible information, since the media is focused on the hot spots currently.
We watched the first episode last night. WHAT THE, WHAT WHAT NOW!? I am left with many, many questions.
There’s a neighborhood network here that asked us to put stuffed bears in our windows so a mom could take her children on a bear hunt. It’s been such a success we’re all leaving the bears in the windows for the duration. I have seen more people walking (at a safe distance) on a damp and chilly day than I can ever remember. Anything to put a little smile on faces (little and old).
I. LOOOOOOOOOOVE. THIS.
Seriously.
If you’re in a walkable neighborhood, try it! I ran around the house looking for stuffed animals. By tomorrow there will be Easter bunnies in every window.
Mom sent me to the bank today to deposit a check and withdraw some cash. I didn’t know the last 4 digits of her SSN and my ID was not enough to prove I was her daughter (same address/phone #/surname). I know mom doesn’t want to “favor” me by placing my name on her accounts, but really she needs to name someone and my sisters have husbands/kids/grandkids to worry about.
Her doc gave her a living will document to fill out–I know she wants a DNR, but until we all agree on her living will nothing can be done. And, of course, there’s always the one difficult sibling
That dynamic inside a family is always soul-crushing. Kind thoughts and best wishes to you as you grind through this.
We had this issue regarding my late father in law. In the months before his death, it became increasingly obvious that the family was not coping with his needs and that we needed to get professional carers in to help. This was very much resisted by one sibling. It took many weeks to wear her down until she finally agreed and we were able to get the help. He died three days later. His closing weeks could have been so much easier - although that is the fact which cannot be spoken about, of course.
The spilled cherry SnoCone exchange in the opening minutes might qualify for the movie scene thread.
Of course . . . the functioning siblings cannot call out the one who denies. Then we’ll all be at each others’ throats.
My oldest sis died in Jan, 2000, dad in Jan 2001. Needless to say it was tough on the family and especially mom (oldest child and beloved husband in a year). One sister made this much tougher than it needed to be. I still hold a private grudge, but we join together for holidays, celebrations, etc and pretend we’re all good.
I just posted in another topic about the Bear Hunt. I heard a child say “no bears yet!”, and I ran and held my old Grateful Dead dancing bear doll out the window. It’s sitting on the windowsill now.
It’s a nationwide movement.
@Auspicious It looks like you are just about at the Manasquan Inlet. You make good time. @CurlzNJ I’m guessing Dave will be off of AP in less than a half hour.
Smooth Sailing!
@MsBean , @CurlzNJ - We passed Asbury Park around midnight. I expect to round Sandy Hook around 4a and be tied at the fuel dock in Atlantic Highlands around 6a. Fuel dock opens at 7a - quick fuel and we should be able to catch favorable current up the East River and through Hell Gate.
We are actually a little slow. The boat owner let a good bit of growth accumulate on the hull so we’re dragging a small farm under the boat. Regardless if nothing goes wrong we should be on Long Island Sound this afternoon and in Mystic CT the following afternoon. Then we just have to get home.
72 hours
By the looks of it, you are right on schedule. Did you see the USS Comfort anywhere along your trip?
Lol on the the growth on the hull. Mr Bean has been using his time to for boat maintenance. Scraping barnacles, cleaning, waxing, painting, etc. He never cleans this much in the house.
I’m a knitter! Right now I’m working on a blanket for a friend who just moved into her new house. I’m also a regular knitter for Project Linus. It’s an organization of people who make blankets for kids who need a hug.
I’d be happy to share ideas and suggestions and lessons!
