OT Other things to do during the quarantine

The shipping report on the BBC is a national institution, even amongst non-sailing people. Mrs H, who does not sleep well, listens to it quite often and, indeed, finds it helps to nod off again.

Indeed. I find it rather tedious as well, and I care about what they have to say. Here in the US the closest analogue we have is NOAA weather radio. My attention tends to drift and I have to listen to several cycles to get it all properly. Much better on the Internet.

I just finished “doing” weather for the day for my trip. Ten minutes with good Internet for looking over the next five days. Looking out any further than that is mostly guessing once you get past “period of darkness followed by light.” grin

Good call as usual. Because, data and science. Stay safe on your travels!

Ditto for the UK. Although I’d delete your “completely”. We’ve been “too little, too late” and there’s a danger we’ll now be “too much, too soon”.

Thank you for the update. I’m looking forward to your trip.

That boat is gorgeous as are so many others. I better not let Mr Bean see the motor boats or I may be SIP on the water.

Dave, that 7-day view is hilarious! But way to go–that’s how it should look right now.
The boat is beautiful, but you WILL need to bundle up; they’re talking SNOW north and west of NYC tomorrow.
Here’s to a safe trip! I’ll be following along from Asbury Park.

WWJD? Did Father Abraham have a temple? Did Moses have a temple? Did the Son Of God have employees?

Nice digs! I swear I can smell that odd mix of diesel, holding tank chemicals, salt, and wood wax that is a signature of so many boats like that. (Not at all an unpleasant smell…just a very distinctive one)

It appears that @Auspicious is on the water! For those interested in seeing where he is, here’s the link again: https://maps.findmespot.com/Track?ishr=49c94b83-17d1-4b12-9b2a-ab890121133b#panel-history

Thanks for the update. For his last trip I kept the link open all the time.

Smooth sailing @Auspicious

More work to do on the boat than expected so we were a couple of hours behind plan getting off the dock this morning. Mostly storing things so they don’t fly around. Fueled up this morning and moving along. Minor electrical issue I fixed underway. A little whining about the small space I had to crawl into. As things look now, we’ll be close to the mouth of a canal as the sun goes down so if we can make it that far we can zoom way in on radar and run the Alligator and Pungo Canal in the dark and anchor on the far side. We’ll make up the time we lost this morning and a bit which would be lovely.

Tortellini soup for dinner last night. Leftovers and toasted English muffins for breakfast. Lunch shortly with be ham sandwiches and cookies. Dinner is meadle and a salad.

Nice knowing some of you are watching us!

What’s meadle. please? Or is that a typo?

I googled and all I got was a small hamlet in Southern England

I thought I posted about meadle already. Meat + noodles = meadle. Not very exotic. Money stretcher in my youth.

Elbow macaroni, mince (ground beef for my American friends), diced tomato, onion, garlic, carrot, celery (surprise! mirepoix), any other veg that is going to turn. I made a bunch at home and used a vacuum sealer and froze it hard. We’ll get two dinners out of what I made. It freezes well and like some other dishes gets better with time.

I’m right on the bitter edge of the Internet but I will take pictures and post when I get a better signal.

Thanks. I must have missed your earlier explanation.

I suppose if the meat was beef you could have:

beef + noodles = moodles

Safe trip.

Anchored for the night off Bellhaven NC. 83 miles today which is pretty good under any circumstances and certainly give our slow start this morning. Sorted out an electrical problem without having to stop earlier in the day. Hoping for another long day tomorrow. Our goal is to pass Norfolk VA before dark on Monday (136 miles ahead) so we can continue up the Chesapeake Bay overnight (the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) at night is not for inexperienced crew) to reach Solomons MD mid Tuesday.

Off to bed with anchor alarm and portable chart plotter for company.

Early start planned tomorrow and matzo brei for breakfast.

Holy moley! 136 miles in two days? That not just long hard days, that’s approaching death march.

At least you are currently insome of the straightest ditches the Corps ever dug and the weather should be reasonable.

We do a puzzle every week or two. Just finished a spring bunny.

Made Coinjock NC last night - 85 miles yesterday so 168 miles over Sat and Sun. Just finished prepping for today - lots of drawbridges and one lock to deal with timing for. About 55 miles to Chesapeake Bay and open water the rest of the way to Solomons. Owner and his son are doing great.

Open water and the Chesapeake are always good. Even decades later I remember how sick of hearing the engine running we all were. Too bad you won’t have time to raise canvas for a break.
