ORIENT BISTRO, Richmond Hill “ - An exceptional and enjoyable Dim-Sum experience that came surprisingly close to my discerning Hong Kong Standard! ( Long Review )

Here in the GTA, whenever I was invited to a Dim Sum luncheon gathering, especially at a previously untried place. I almost always approach such an event with reservation and guarded skepticism, particularly when it was based on 3rd party, hear-say, recommendation. Using knowledge garnered, whilst savoring well-crafted, traditional and authentic Dim Sum in Hong Kong and transforming them into a reference yard stick. IMHO, the current standard of most GTA Dim Sum offerings and creations sadly fell short of expectation and quality. Most are found to be faulty, unrefined and rough around the edges. The frequently encountered, ‘easily fall apart‘, thick wrapper Har-Gow or the stout, dense and opaque Cheung-Fun rice crepes are prime examples!

Therefore, the surprisingly enjoyable outcome of my Dim Sum lunch at Orient Bistro today was an unexpected revelation and left me with quite a deep and positive impression.

We made our limited selection from a rather immense and diverse dim-sum menu. I was in 7th heaven when I noticed almost everyone of my favorite and desired dishes were present!..so many choices but so small our party size………Decisions! Decisions! Decisions!!!

After some serious brain storming, we ended up going bonkers by picking the following 11 dishes for our party of 3!!... whilst leaving behind a whole slew of other enticing and attractive offerings!..definitely candidates for our next visit!

Our selection included the following Dim Sum dishes:

  • Crispy Spring Roll with Taro and Chicken

  • Steamed Shrimp and Choi-Sum Cheung-Fun Rice Crepe

  • Fried Taro and Pork Croquette Puffs

  • Steamed Shrimp and Bamboo Shoot Dumplings aka Har Gow

  • Steamed Chives with Shrimp in XO Sauce Dumplings

  • Fresh Baked BBQ Pork Buns

  • Salted Egg Yolk Lava Custard Buns

  • Fried crispy Squid Tentacles with Spiced Salt

  • Silken Tofu Jello in Wood-Cask

To these, we augmented them with the following luncheon Chef’s Special dishes:

  • Fried Chicken Cartilage with Salted Egg Yolk Coating
  • Stir fried mini Pork Ribs with Maggi Sauce and minced Garlic

OMG! What an addictive and delectable list of well executed food! Some even worthy of a few rare ‘ Wows ‘. First off, all dishes were freshly made and arrived at the table piping hot. Fillings of all the dumplings were nicely seasoned with some unexpected nice touches added. A slightly pronounced and welcoming sesame oil addition to the usually bland shrimp fillings was such clever approach. Generous fillings with delicious saucy ingredients can be found in perennial favorites like the ultra-crispy Spring Rolls and the smooth and light Taro paste crispy Croquettes.
Wrappers of the Har Gow and Rice crepe, IMO, can be made a bit thinner and more delicate. However, compared to most, they are more than acceptable.
Only slight misses were the rather thick dough Baked BBQ Pork Buns, which were a touch underdone and the slightly dried and under-seasoned Squid Tentacles. Both Casa Victoria and O’ Mei’s renditions of both dishes were superior.

Now, a few words about some of the stand-out stars of the meal!

First off, those ‘to-die-for’ crispy and savory chicken cartilage, over-loaded with thick layer of umami salted duck egg yolk coating. If one compares say the KFC Popcorn Chicken with these heavenly tasting morsels The former would be a 1 whilst these cartilage would be a 10!!!..Yes! They are really that good!!

The fried mini pork ribs were no slouch either! Both the crispy and sticky texture of the exterior coupled with a multidimensional and flavorful taste profile prevented one from stopping eating them!!
Last but not least, a big thumbs up to the rather rare ‘ Silken Tofu Jello Pudding with Ginger Syrup ‘. Delicate, velvety smooth and not overly sweet. Absolutely delightful as a dessert to round off a near perfect meal!: please include [City, Neighborhood] in your post title above. We are friends with 3 twenty-somethings who had never had dim sum, so we took them out to Orient Bistro this weekend, based on the glowing recommendation above. Booking a reservation was easy with their online system (only up to a week in advance). The food was overall excellent (I didn’t bother with pictures, since Charles captured a lot of the options above). And I was surprised at how reasonable the price was. We over-ordered, doubling each dish to ensure everyone had at least one of each item, and left with 5 leftover containers-worth. Total price was under $200 with tax and tip.

Here’s what we ordered:

  • Taro dumpling with pork - crisp coating, less oily than other renditions.
  • Sticky rice with chicken in lotus leaf - especially amazing, fragrant rice, enhanced by a salted egg yolk.
  • Pan fried turnip cake - crisp edges and juicy chunks of turnip.
  • Steamed rice noodle roll, minced beef with coriander - beautiful, supple, scented with citrus.
  • Jumbo har gow - really big, with a bit too much wrapper as Charles noted. Otherwise, perfectly cooked.
  • Siu Mai shrimp and pork - very tasty, with juicy shiitake chunks.
  • Shanghai soup dumplings - delicious.
  • Meat and vegetable dumpling in Chiu Chow style - one of the favourites of our young friends, with sweet water chestnut chunks and peanuts.
  • Beef ball with bean curd - beautiful fine puréed texture, perfumed with citrus, with enoki mushrooms underneath.
  • Bean curd roll with pork - unlike other versions, enhanced with sautéed cabbage, carrots, and other veggies.
  • Egg tart - huge, incredibly flaky pastry, and barely sweet custard.
  • Egg cake with caramel - interesting dark brown sponge cake, also only lightly sweetened.

Thanks Charles.

We noted your enthusiasm for the chicken cartilage dish and felt that would be a bridge too far for our dim sum newbies. Happy Lunar New Year to you as well!

We popped in briefly for dim sum this weekend. As were were only two, we could only sample a few dishes this time. We were again impressed by the value, about $50 for 5 generously-sized dishes, including tip. And the quality of the dishes remains excellent.

We tried the meat & vegetable dumpling in Chiu Chow style, with a filling that including
the usual peanuts and crispy water chestnuts.

A new one for us was stuffed hairy melon and bitter melon. The bitter melon had a meat stuffing with citrus peel. The hairy melon had pork, shrimp, dried scallop, and tiny bits of ham. Both were delicious.

We repeated with the sticky rice with chicken in lotus leaf, which was still lovely but perhaps not as perfumed as last time.

Another new one for us was lotus root patties with pork. Not what we would call patties, this was more of a large roll that had been cut into sections and deep fried. The shell was crispy and the succulent interior had juicy chunks of veggies also bits of shrimp.

We ordered the pork with coriander and pickled vegetable cheung fun - nice but the coriander and pickles were very subtle.

Wow, talk about glowing reviews, this one almost takes the cake!

Sorry to detract ever so slightly from this love fest but we’ve been to OB many times lunch and dinner (they opened at an inopportune time just before COVID struck), the last time for dim sum was about 2 months ago, and food was good but did not stand out overall from the myriad of other similar good Chinese restaurants in York Region.

The owners are a husband & wife team from China whom we knew when they had a restaurant of which the name escapes me but they were located in Kennedy/Denison area in Markham. That closed down and shortly thereafter they opened OB in Richmond Hill. They have a sister restaurant called Joyous Bistro that they opened about 2 years ago at Leslie/Finch in North York that you can also try.

We eat in Richmond Hill/Markham only a few times per year, so we have few points for comparison (hence relying on Charles’s recs). Where else should we go for dim sum? Our main other experiences have been Skyview and Casa Victoria.

Do give ‘ Ox Club ‘ at Warden and Steeles ( T&T plaza ) a try!
No opulent, mega-bucks decor and fancy fusion/contemporary DIm Sim here.
Subdued, relaxed atmosphere with a menu featuring a wide selection of solid, well crafted traditional fare with generous filling. ( suspect most if not all DS are made in house ).
Love their Taro Croquette!
