Oregon/Cal Coast

Near Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, right off the 101 (take the 14th st. exit), try Slice of Humboldt.

Wow! Taste Of Bin in Arcata? Interesting! I could see Trinidad! :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Oh donā€™t forget to visit Dick Taylor Chocolate factory in Eureka. I havenā€™t been to the new factory yet. But the old factory was good for stocking up good chocolates.

I was really surprised to see a Caribbean joint in, of all places, Arcata. But apparently Arcata has more than one Caribbean place. There is a Jamaican place also, which I havenā€™t been.

Perhaps they are leaning in to some sort of a mutual cannabis theme.

Apparently the owners are Bajan.

Not that it matters much but looks like Taste of Bim is in Eureka which is better for me since thats where we are spending the night

Most wineries in Oregon are between the Coast range and the Cascades , with the rest up the Columbia Gorge.
Weather is too extreme on the coast.

Ah you are right. Now I remember, we got Taste of Bim takeouts during Covid and ate at our hotel in Arcata- the Lady Anne Inn. I still remember that B&B fondly- charming Victorian lovingly restored over the years by the former mayor of Arcata and his wife. Nice breakfast too. Truly a labor of love.

When in Cannon Beach, ya gotta go to Pelican Pub. When we were in Cannon Beach, that was the place to goā€¦because it was the only place to go. And it was fun! I think we stayed at the on-site hotel so we hung out at the Pelican a lot.

Plan ahead and make reservations for Patricia Green. Sokol Blosser has one of the nicest tasting rooms imaginable. In McMinnville, there was no winemaker more central to the Willamette Valley wine story than David Lett. His legend lives on at Eyrie. Its wines are iconic and noteworthy. Pinot Noir of course, but probably the best Pinot Gris on the planet. The Pinot Blanc is lovely, too.

Iā€™d be interested in knowing whatā€™s good since itā€™s been a few years for me. Not sure how long youā€™re planning to take. Watch out for indulging in too much fried foods. Stop in food coops and good grocery stores for deli foods, fruits and vegetables. I like food coop in Arcata and Eureka. Donā€™t forget Mendocino. Thereā€™s a nice grocery there in town, I forget the name.

Are you thinking of Harvest Market at Mendosaā€™s?

Yes!

Two and a half recommendations: In either Yachats or Seal Rock, check out Luna Seafood, and definitely order the oysters, which are incredible (but itā€™s all good). And the beach at Seal Rock is amazing at low tide. In Newport, stop in at Panini for very good bread, pastries and pizza. Oh, and another: Buttercup in Nehalem is open 10-4 (I think) Thursday - Sunday. The burnt chocolate ice cream is the best chocolate Iā€™ve ever had (nicely bitter), and if they have the Malaysian fish chowder, get it.

Is Margaret Fox, the former chef of Cafe Beaujolais in Mendocino, part of Harvest Market? I always wondered what happened to her after she sold the restaurant.

I read she was involved but I donā€™t know if sheā€™s still involved today.

Are they owners or the cooks Malaysian?

No. And most of what they offer is fairly conventional soup fare. Their regular clam chowder is better than average, provided they fully cook the veggies (esp the celery), which they often donā€™t. Buttercup used to be excellent across the board, and now itā€™s much spottier.

We are back. Well fed and a nice time overall. Managed to hit some of the places mentioned here. Most were out of the way or closed on our dates. One of the most surprising aspects was how difficult it can be finding a decent meal after 7:30pm!! in some of the towns.

In order of appearance from north to south

Ecola Seafood Restaurant & Market (Cannon Beach) - Good fish and chips. Much of the coast offers Halibut fish and chips which is some of the meatiest Iā€™ve seen. Maybe a tad too meaty, but good overall.

Tillamook Creamery - Very neat place even though ice cream is just ok

Clearwater (Newport) - Probably best meal on the coast. Surprisingly tasty Asian dishes like Orange Cauliflower and crab and garlic noodles. A dock full of seals in the back is reason enough to come. While it was the best food, the service was very odd early on. And its weird that they let you reserve a table at 8:30 when by 9 they are already empty and have chairs hanging on tables.

Nosh Eatery (Florence) - Pleasant surprise considering I was aiming for Mariā€™s Kitchen next door which was closed. Very solid ribs and salmon bowl. I was intrigued by Mariā€™s Kitchen Romanian leaning menu

Hunter Creek Bar & Grill (Gold Beach) - A desperate find after everything else either closed by 6, out of ingredients by 7:30, or warnings of 90 minute waits for food. This one is a very, very local bar and we clearly looked like outsiders. Good burgers and fries so all well at the end

Endicott Gardens Bed & Breakfast (Gold Beach)- Our favorite discovery of the entire trip, even though we are firmly hotel people. Figured Iā€™ll mix in one of those between Holiday Inns. Its really a special place. A nice couple that used to own a restaurant in Colorado. About 4 rooms. The garden alone worth the schlep. And to top it all an outstanding three course garden to table Breakfast. Great value.

SeaQuake Brewing (Crescent City) - Solid pizza and beer. For pizza snubs from NYC this was as good as I was hoping for a place like this. The rest of the menu is promising as well

Humboldt Bay Bistro (Eureka) - Worst meal of the trip. Appetizers were fine if not a little salty, but all downhill from there. Seafood pasta, Creme BrulƩ, particularly mediocre

Napa was a mixed bag but thats perhaps for another thread

Sorry for the belated post, but thank you so much for the trip report. Iā€™m so happy you were pleased with Clearwater in Newport. Itā€™s my favorite on the Oregon Coast.

I love to go antiquing in Florence, but Iā€™ve never eaten there. Iā€™ll give Nosh Eatery a try next time Iā€™m there.

I hope you continue your trip report with Napa when you have time, and thank you again for the informative report. Lots of food for thought in planning my next trip. Iā€™ll see myself out.
