October 2023 New Orleans Trip Report

This 100%. I used to live a 5-minute walk from there and it was extremely dangerous (I went there pretty much every day). Now I live a 20-minute walk from there…still not as many calories expended on the walk as eaten in the ice cream, but at least I’m not eating it as often.

Thank you @linguafood . I am not usually a fan of ice cream, but I may have to put that on the list.

This town seems to have gone mad! Everyone (daughter included) dressed up in silver cowboy gear, and trying to get to the Bey concert. We are trying to get to La Petite Grocery.

Things ARE nuts this week because of Beyonce. We flew home last night via Houston and I swear, 90% of the people on the flight were coming for that concert.

If you go to Creole Creamery and they have the Green Fairy flavor, just get it.

La Petite Grocery -a bit of an excursion, and we had to compte with the Beehive!

Smallish menu with several appetizing specials written on the board

For starter
I got the yellow tail tartare. Tartare was nice; pickled carrots were awesome!

Husband got the crab beigenetts, which we both loved

We shared some fried green tomatoes with country ham. We loved the flavors and textures of the tomatoes but the country ham was hard to chew

For mains
Country ham wrapped pork tenderloin cooked medium rare sous vide, then criisped, served with a sweetish cabbage slaw. I enjoyed, although husband found it a bit “under” and bland.

Husband had chicken breast with a delicious corn bread stuffing, and black eyed peas he liked more than he thought he would. I thought they were under.

We enjoyed our evening!

Today we explored various neighborhoods, and a few plantations, and learned about Louisiana before the Louisiana purchase.

We just had to go to our girl Nina Compton’s place

Best.Meal.So.Far!
Beautiful drinks!, including a nice selection of “mocktails”.

I started with pork belly with a jerk plantain sauce. The sauce had some kind of crispy bean in it. Maybe pigeon peas, flash fried. There was also a few peppers; maybe padron. Delicious.

There was also a tuna tartare, said to be the best thing on the menu (maybe I misheard that)

Biscuits with bacon butter and honey butter

Deviled eggs

For mains, I had fried chicken with a jerk honey sauce, and coconut grits. I know I said I had the best fried chicken ever a few days ago, but this was as good or better, in a knife and fork setting. So good.

Son had the hangar steak he said he has waited six years for. He hardly ever sees it on menus and has started to believe he had imagined the one he had years ago, but this one was as good. He says it was like steak , but with a braised texture.

We also had deserts; a wonderful bread pudding of course; one of us has had one each night!

A mango creme brule

And a piece of chocolate cake.

A great night.

WWII museum tommorow.

If you love deviled eggs, the best in the city are two blocks from my house at Patois (Uptown). They are crazy good and they’re on the happy hour menu from 5-6:30! Also other nice things!

We love deviled eggs!

Get yourself out of the tourist zone and head on Uptown. The deviled eggs at Patois are with tobiko caviar, furikake, and strips of fried wonton skin. 10/10 recommend! https://patoisnola.com/new-orleans-uptown-patois-food-menu. You can take the St. Charles streetcar up to Audubon Park, have a 4 PM outdoor cocktail at the Parkview Guesthouse overlooking the avenue, and then stroll down to Patois for their happy hour  This is my neighborhood and it’s lovely.

Sounds lovely, but not in the cards for this trip. How about this one? We only stopped by to look, but I thought it looked interesting for more experienced and ambitious parties.

Today after the museum we went to Cochon and Cochon butcher.
Spicy Bloody Mary and Delicious bread for the table

We especially enjoyed the smoked short rib and the Louisiana Cochon, which was a pulled pork burger

Crab “ravigote”

And then take away Mufflettas from the Cochon butcher.

The Columns is very nice, at least the public areas that I’ve seen—they did a major renovation (sorely needed) a couple of years ago when it changed ownership and the new version is dramatically nicer than the old one. Great food too. The porch/patio is a very nice place to sit. See also The Chloe, a similar place that just opened a few years ago a little ways down St. Charles. Also a great patio and nice food.

OMG! My friends had their wedding reception at the Columns many many moons ago. We had cocktails there when we visited last year.

We did Saffron tonight.

Again, husband’s call, and I was hesitant, but really enjoyed it. It was loud, but enjoyable

Aaaaand yet another version of gumbo; this one a starter, “curried”, and with a table side pour. It tasted “bright” somehow; maybe there was citrus. Husband’s new favorite!

Son and DIL had a fried onion starter; onion pakoda

My starter was a crab filled chick pea pancake; crab pudha

Garlic naan and. … don’t remember

Some great seafood; husband’s was a snapper special.

I wanted the same, or the other special, a tandoori chicken. They were out of both, and I was very happy with my redfish with … sauce, mango pickle, and “curd rice”.

DIL had chicken biryani, which she said was the best she’d ever had, and she lived in London for several years!

For desert, Cardamom ice cream, pistachios, vermicelli "

And “it’s not even your birthday cake”

All good, and the strawberry sauce was nice with both the cake AND the ice cream

Very nice! That snapper special looks delicious. I just looked at their menu, tons of items I would like to try. Next time in NOLA.

And finally , I got my choice, and we went to Brennan’s.

I had the Bloody Mary … family members French Quarter, 9th Ward

Family members had duck confit hash with duck eggs, they really enjoyed it, although they removed some undone white .

I had eggs Benedict

One had a zucchini omelette with crab; she’s gone on and on about the zucchini, which had some sort of chili crispy.

Husband had an off the menu “American breakfast”.

And of course, the Bananas Foster; no picture and video too big to post.

Finally, after sitting through a hysterical tantrum at the bar, free T shirts!.

I am happy you were able to breakfast there! I still have my photocopy of their Bananas Foster recipe they handed me after our meal!

What the heck happened?! And is there a photo of the t-shirt (my wardrobe is 90% t-shirts so I’m naturally interested).

I assume that your group wasn’t the one throwing the tantrum?! :grinning:
