NYC burger recs

Joining in from Boston to ask this esteemed group for burger recommendations. Heading down next weekend and focusing on b&w cookies, a visit to Katz for a pastrami Reuben, Russ and Daughters for bagel, lox and cheese, and hoping to add in a good burger for husband.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom you’re willing to share.

Is there a particular style of burger your husband likes? This is all second hand reporting, because I don’t eat hamburgers, but Hamburger America is generating a lot of excitement, as is Gotham Burger Social Club. There’s also the “legendary” Corner Bistro burger.

My two favorites in the City.

  1. Black Label Burger at Minetta Tavern
  2. Miss Keen Burger at Keens Steakhouse

I think if the OP’s husband reads the Infatuation roundup he will be able to give us a better idea of the type of burger he is looking for - luxury, experimental or just a honking good greasy serving of beef on a bun.

And here’s a list for smash burgers!

I saw some one on TikTok eating the burger from The Fulton by Jean George. It looked fantastic.

Au Cheval is probably the most accessible from the famous bunch.
For no frills, solid burger and more take a look at Nowon

Wow! Many thanks to all of you for contributing. Husband is an equal opportunity burger eater so all varieties will get equal consideration. Next step, add to my ever expanding Google map. We’re staying near Central Park this time but will travel for good eats!

Still crave for that 7th str smashburger I had last year!! It’s a work of art.

If it is the Jean Georges French onion soup burger, it is great! A little umami bomb!

I am a big fan of the burger at Red Hook Tavern. Simple with cheese and a thick slab of onion. Location is a bit of a pain to get to but the venue is charming with the jumble of tables in a former liquor store that evokes the middle of the last century. At the other end of the spectrum the burger at the bar at Manhatta is phenomenal. View is spectacular from the top of the former seat of the most powerful bank in the world looking up at the rest of Manhattan and the burger made with dry aged beef is up to the setting.

Does anyone make a good blue cheese burger now that the Spotted Pig is long gone?

I really enjoyed April Bloomfield’s blue cheese burger around 2009. That was my favourite burger at that point in my life.

any thoughts on Bill’s Bar and Burger or JG Melon?

I’ve never been to JG Melon or Bill’s Bar. Also, I’m out of the loop. I haven’t been able to visit NYC since Aug 2019.

I’m hoping some others can give their 2 cents on those 2 burgers!

Here is an old comment from 2017.

I’ve always wanted to go to Keens. (@ipsedixit mentioned their burger) It’s a legendary steakhouse in the West 30s, with the old NYC atmosphere.

Since you’ll already be heading to the Lower East Side, a more spacious, polished restaurant on W 36th might be a nice contrast to Katz’s and the Russ & Daughters experience.

Of course I had to know which bank - and my suspicions were right. Lots of history there.

Bill’s is a small chain and if you’re looking good chain burger, its okay but nothing I would go out of the way for.

JG Melon makes a fine pub burger. A legendary bar too. Have not been there in ages as I live too far away now. I would go more for the bar than the burger.

Not big on the trendy burgers myself but there are smashburgers on every corner these days if that’s your thing. Smashburger obviously makes a very good one.

I know JG Melon gets a lot of love from chefs. I watched a show where Bobby Flay was talking about how much he loved it
