My never ending quest - new restaurants I won't hate in Tristate NY, CT area

Mine’s in 3 weeks. Yes, post both and enjoy!

Another Pisces?

Yep, last day. And I don’t really like fish!

Thank you, Chef Scott, for opening Rattlesnake Jack’s. I make a decent Mexican dinner and margarita, but have been wishing for a restaurant like the departed Cactus Jack for a long time now.

Well, I’m in luck - Chef Scott is back, on Halstead Ave. in Harrison, NY. We were lucky enough to get a booth, which I hope has my name on it from hereon. Charles (Scott’s son) treated us wonderfully, and it appears that all your staff hustles admirably. Your dishes were excellent, and if possible, I’d love to see the mole poblano (delish) and the chicken w/waffles (next time?) as regular items.

Your bartender is expert, my Jack L.I.T. was very good indeed. Hubby had a combo platter and margarita, and enjoyed both. I’d love to get the tableside guacamole, but youknowwho doesn’t eat it. We skipped appetizers, although they looked good, and dessert, because there were so many people waiting for a table. Next time, for sure, on both. In all, we had a great time.

I highly recommend Rattlesnake Jack’s - the kids like the overhead train set - and hope to return soon.

When are you going to Bernard’s?

Hi…NoMa on Saturday, Bernard’s on the 18th of May.

Keep us posted on how you like The National.

Did you see this?

For me, The National this Sunday. - are we a day apart? And anniversary also in May, but we’ll be in Maine. Review looks good. I’ll post!!

I’m the 16th but like to eat out on Saturdays or Sundays.

Our anniversary is May 18th - how funny yours is in May too!

Similar landmarks, and you saved my life from the bowels of hell.

Mikey liked it!

And Mikey usually has a problem with everything! The waitperson Diego was too young to know that reference, btw, which was depressing.

I wasn’t pleased with the setup, I don’t like banquettes, and the tables were too close together. There, I got my complaint out of the way. Wait, what? You, only one complaint? I know, right?

Okay, it was early, and sparsely populated - place fills up at 7:30 - but we got our request for drinks almost immediately. The drink special of the night looked good, a whiskey-pisco porton-dry vermouth concoction that was calling my name because it was a Bensonhurst. Imagine if I told Diego about that reference? — The Honeymooners, for the youngsters out there. It was also strong and may now be my runner up to a Sidecar.

Now comes the best part. We had settled on two appetizers, a tapas calamari and the ‘to share’ mussels. When I asked how big the portions were, Diego asked how hungry we were, and then directed us away from the tapas and I chose the NoMa Social pizza.

We had to ask for bread with the mussels, but I’m okay with it this time. The mussels were in a spicy tomato sauce, and it was worthy of dunking.

The pizza - remember that best part I spoke of? - Mikey LIKES yuppie pizza. Nope, Mikey had never had yuppie pizza before, and I deliberately chose his favorite, The Woodsy, from Michael’s in Portchester (the one I now make from time to time) with sausage, cherry peppers, tomatoes, mozzarella but - instead of mushrooms, this one had shrimp. It was delish. But now I have to eat crow (on a yuppie pizza, if need be, not really I wouldn’t kill a crow) and bring Mikey to all the yuppie pizza places I keep kvetching about. Life is funny.

Entrees were again praised by Mikey (I couldn’t get over it either), he had the filet mignon special with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Perfectly cooked, he said.

Here comes another best part. I had the burger, the $16. burger, and asked ahead of time if it came with fries. Yes, I was told, and yes, I could get the sweet potato fries on the special for no extra charge. As they say in that stupid commercial - whaaaat? Yup. They were reallly good, as was the burger, which I had to bring home.

We shared a brownie sundae, also very good, and the espresso was nice and strong.

BTW, the chef is from F.I.S.H. in Portchester, whose ambiance I never liked, and I don’t remember being blown away by the food. Oh, and perhaps because NoMa is in a hotel, it didn’t have the yuppie glut that F.I.S.H. had. I was a happy camper.

Next time we might get tapas and all appetizers and a pizza, they were that good. Yeah, Mikey wants to go back and, get this, on his birthday!

I almost forgot, the bill was $115., a bargain compared to the bills we’ve gotten lately, and a certificate from restaurant.com made it even better. Of course we tipped on the whole amount…

Thank you, Gwenn, for recommending NoMa Social.

Hey, you’re welcome, but it wasn’t me!!! I never heard of it before you mentioned it, but now I’m going to try it. Great review and I’m so glad Mikey is happy!!!

Shoot, I wasn’t sure it was you. I tried searching but it didn’t work.

JMF, did you recommend it for the cocktails?

How was 121, Gwenn?

We love 121. It’s like being on vacation. It’s rural and we are very well treated, to the point where they actually save our favorite table for us and our drinks get to the table before we order them (we are such creatures of habit!) We like the food. They underwent a huge remodel and menu revamp about 2 years ago where they lost a lot of regulars, but they are so open to suggestions and really have come back to a lot of the things the area wants. We have been going there since Joe Bueti, of Village Social and Locali, opened it, though he is no longer part of the operation.

They do have a vibrant bar scene and will be doing their spring menu soon which will have more appetizers on it. They make a great pretzel croissant with honey butter!

Sounds nice, Gwenn. How lovely that they know you and keep a table for you. We’ve been searching for 30 years and the closest we got was Villa Nova - and they closed.

We went to 121 ages ago and my immediate reaction, as per my usual, was that there were too many yuppies afoot.

For sure, in the neck of the woods. And hit it during a horse show and then they are all in riding gear!!

Hah! Not my cup of tea. As I said, Gunga Din…

"JMF, did you recommend it for the cocktails? "

What place do you mean? This thread is a bit unconnected and sprawling.

The only place I recommend in Westchester for cocktails at this time is Burrata in Eastchester.

Not NoMa Social then. Okay.

Ah well, until memory serves or the recommendor surfaces, I have no idea who recommended NoMa Social.

At any rate, I thank them.

Probably jfood

I think so too

Sorry, jfood.

It’s you I have to thank for the very excellent meal we had at NoMa Social. I hate these senior moments.

I hope there’s a senior residence out there with top notch food and cocktails and service that passes my muster.
