My Dry January has gotten all wet

Unfortunately those beers have .5% alcohol. Right now he’s been told no alcohol so the Heineken is his best choice.

A friend just gave me a good bottle of rose from Santa Ynez winery that she had been to and said don’t put spritzer in it! She knows me well…

If 1 Proof is too much, yeah, avoid it. You may be getting more than that from a ripe banana.

I’ve had that Heineken 0.0% beer and I agree it’s really good - it tastes just like the regular Heineken but there’s no alcohol in it. There are lots of 0.0% beers out there now and with the whole sobriety movement taking off there are lots available. If your partner can’t consume anything with alcohol then you do have to watch the labels of course because, as you discovered, some of the beers have 0.5% alcohol. I’ve tried Partake beer and can highly recommend it if it’s available in the U.S. And Corona Sunbrew with a wedge of lime is really tasty  I’ve only tried one de-alcoholized wine so far and didn’t like it but I don’t even miss wine TBH so I never bothered pursuing the de-alcoholized wine route.

There are lots of other really tasty non-alcoholic beverages available if your partner is interested in exploring that route. There’s always sparkling water, tonic water, kombucha, etc. (Can you tell I like drinks with bubbles?) I haven’t tried making my own mocktails at home yet although that’s on my bucket list.

Kombucha often also has small amounts (<0.5%) of alcohol

True! We have a store here in Ottawa called Knyota and they sell non-alcoholic beer, wine, spirits and a plethora of other non-alcoholic drinks.

Thanks for all the recs. Going to find out from his doc this week if the .5 beers are all right to mix with prescription he has to take. Or if he can even have a regular beer (he likes hazy ipa’s) once or twice a week.

My daughter in law doesn’t drink so when we’re together I usually make her the non alcoholic version of a drink we like with fresh blood orange juice, vodka or rye, fizzy water and fresh lemon juice. I guess my husband will be joining her at our next get together!

Reactions? Personally, seems like a lot of hand-wringing over something fairly innocent and healthier for most people, but I can see how NA beverages might be a slippery slope for a hardcore addict. Maybe.:woman_shrugging:t2:

I guess I’m lucky never to have been in a position to wonder or worry that a NA beer, wine or cocktail will drive me to drink real alcohol. But I have alcoholic friends who think–and fear–that way.

I sorta/kinda get the legal justification for not letting minors buy NA “liquor”, vape stuff and herbal cigs.

Doctor told him that having a beer or one glass of wine is fine so now I’ve got a six pack of Heineken 0.0 I need to use up. Finding out about all the choices out there was interesting though…

I often use beer peeps brought that I don’t care for to steam mussels.

So… what’s everyone’s drink of choice to celebrate the conclusion of dry January tomorrow or Saturday?

Since Saturday is the beginning of February (and harkening the end of dry January) I will start the evening with tap water  I’m planning on going to a movie then drinks after with a meetup group. We make our own way to the movie theatre then gather after the movie is over and head out for drinks so we can discuss the film. Since I will be on my own for dinner I will be going to my favourite Chinese restaurant Shanghai Wonton Noodle which happens to be near the movie theatre. Apparently the food is pretty authentic but they are really old school so there are just a bunch of noodle dishes on the menu - not even beverages. They have a water cooler though! It’s new  The resto we will be going to after is the Albion Rooms but their kitchen is under renovations right now so they are offering an abbreviated menu for now. My immediate concern is will chocolate ganache be on the dessert menu? And I hope their spicy shrub is still on the drinks menu (ginger beer, lime juice and blueberry syrup IIRC). I really know how to live it up!

Does CA do BYOB at restaurants at all? It’s a thing here in PA bc of ancient booze laws.

Your plans for Saturday sound nice!

I’ve been wishing for a glass of red wine, an itch NA wine won’t easily scratch. Also a gin cocktail. Looking forward to Saturday! :grinning:

It varies from province to province. In Ontario (or in Ottawa at least) some restaurants will allow you to BYOB but they charge a corkage fee. The convenience stores have just been allowed to sell liquor and that was a big thing in Ontario. As a Quebecker I a still floored by how backwards it is in Ontario and I’ve been living here for 37 years. I love Ottawa and plan on living out my days here but honestly the liquor laws antiquated here IMHO.

In Quebec many restos (but not all) will allow you to BYOB and as far as I know there is no corkage fee. When I was drinking, I often brought my own bottle of wine with me and no one ever charged me a corkage fee.

The differences in provinces might have something to do with the liquor laws but I’m not sure. Can any other Ontarians bail me out?..

Yeah, I’m sure it’s about liquor laws in the different states/provinces.

I was shocked that I couldn’t buy beer in VA after midnight when we were in D.C. for a conference. They just locked the beer fridges at the Unimart we went to :scream: (it was 1 minute after midnight ).

That said, I absolutely love BYOB bc it significantly reduces the bill when dining out, and most BYOBs don’t take a corkage fee, either.

Always gotta look for the positive
