Microwave emergency! Repair or replace?

OK, here’s my take: “arcing” + “black spot” = new appliance.

I’m still in the “give a shot at fixing” camp but I have to admit that’s only because I’m a tinkerer by nature and enjoy fixing things.

That, plus I tend to anthropomorphize the malfunction and take it personally (“You think you can do this to ME, Mr. (Kenmore, LG, Bosch, etc.)”)

LoL. Just my personal mania.

Here’s an update;

I shared all of your input, and husband, who uses it the most, is thinking of the Panasonic NN-SD975S or the similar NN-SD987.

What’s the difference?

Of course the one I prefer isn’t like all the rest of the shiny stainless steel (I haven’t) chosen in our kitchen. Form over function?

I think the NN-SD987 has been discontinued, but as to the difference I don’t think it has the inverter tech that the NN-SD9755 has.

But, wow, 370 is quite a bit to pay for a microwave. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not cheap when it comes to kitchen appliances (heck, my refrigerator is well into the 5 digit figures (but thankfully that 5 digit figure still starts with a “1”). I just fee like microwaves are disposable items and really have lifespans less than 5 years.

Like this one is only 220, a bit smaller, but still same wattage.

But whatever you decide, good luck!

Also, do you have Costco membership?

This is a similar Panasonic model to the NN-SD9755, but simply with a different model number, but has the same size and functionality, and about 100 cheaper.

I agree that simpler/cheaper will most likely be better. Mine is a small one mounted in an above counter cabinet/bookshelf. It is only a microwave, and I think I bought from the local Sears (Kenmore branded) in 1998.

That is a lot to spend on a microwave, but not so much for a microwave and convection oven. In fact, that is pretty close to what I paid for a microwave and separate countertop convection oven.

Yes, but our local Costco doesn’t have it in stock, so we can’t see the finish.

I’m curious. Did you use the advanced features on your JennAir ? How does this Sensor thing works ?

I did use the convection oven and the broiler, the various power levels, the defrost setting, and husband found the sensor useful, but I don’t recall how it worked.

You can always buy online and then return at a physical costco without any hassles.

I actually have the similar Panasonic model (but in 1.2 cubic inch size) and it’s great so far.

Too late!

The emergency has been defused. The situation has cooled down. Congrats and happy reheating !

That looks like mine, but I think newer version. I have the Panasonic NN-SD 797S, which is now 10 years old and have never had any problems with it. The only thing I don’t like is the size, I’m planning my kitchen remodel now and will probably ditch it for something much smaller.

Why do you have a scale model of your kitchen inside your new MWO?

Well, if you have a shiny and brand new microwave, then it will reveal the truth.
