Michelin take-out [Toronto]

I admit, I don’t really follow the Michelin Guide much.

I wasn’t even aware Bar Vendetta and Fonda Balam were listed until this week.

I’ve been enjoying take-out from both places.

I’ll keep track of Michelin take-out, at any level or price-point, here.

I picked up the lentil and turnip dish, the rapini side and a rapini side from Gia tonight. The photo of romanesco was blurry, so I didn’t post it. The rapini photo is half the portion.

Everything was fine, but not too special. I will try pastas another time.

They were out of puntarelle salad tonight, unfortunately.

I was curious about the portion size. My dietitian will be happy I got my cup of legumes today. :grinning:

Nice staff. The dining room was full on a Sunday night, which is nice to see.

I tried the pork meatball vermicelli bowl (bun) ($15) and the fried spring rolls ($8) Everything was delicious. Good amount of herbs.

They were out of banh mi and brisket pho by 8:30 pm on a Saturday night.

I ordered the Burrata with Delicata Squash and Cranberries ($31), Fave e Cicoria ($16), Gnocchi with tomato, basil, chili and smoked ricotta ($19), Cavatelli e Coniglio with yellow tomato ragu, fennel seed and pistacchio breadcrumbs ($31), and Pollo with potatoes , artichokes and olives ($38) from Enoteca Sociale tonight. The 5 dishes came to around $154 after tax and before tip.

We liked everything I ordered. I called mid-afternoon and picked up the order around 5:40 pm. I will order from them again. They’re open daily at 5 pm.

Excellent stuffed zucchini flowers,

panzanella

and eggplant ravioli

from Viaggio.
I’ll be back.

I like Viaggio as much as I like Dova, Bar Vendetta and Enoteca Sociale. I might even like it a little more.

Viaggio falls under the Selected Restaurants, same section of the Guide as Enoteca Sociale and Bar Vendetta.

Do you eat immediately outside of the restaurant when you pick up (I don’t think any fried food and bread in panzanella “survives” more than 5 minutes without losing a lot of “quality” and becoming pretty much inedible)

I live fairly close to the restaurant.

There is a park with benches next to the patio, so I could have eaten it there.

I ate the panzanella at home, it was still edible, and the bread was still crispy/ chewy.

I’m not bothered eating fried food 20 or 30 minutes later.

I’m not eating inside restaurants very often (once in the past 2.5 years) , so if there’s no room on the patio, as was the case tonight, and I want something fried, or panzanella, I get it to go.

Just curious - since covid is now endemic and the current situation most likely won’t change dramatically in many years/our lifetime, do you plan to go back to eat at restaurants in the future ?

I don’t plan to go back to eating inside restaurants, unless the ventilation is excellent and the tables are well-spaced.

My shorter answer is no, I won’t be planning to go back to dining inside restaurants.

I have some health issues which could become much worse if I come down with Covid or Bird Flu. I didn’t know about the health issues in Feb 2020.

I feel for you. It’s unfortunate.

Especially when it comes to Michelin type restaurant, where so much of the experience is the service as it is part of the food.

Luckily, maybe, the service at the Bibs and Selected Restaurants in Toronto is usually friendly and accommodating

I’ve been getting into some charged discussions with some friends over whether a restaurant should offer take-out to people who are immune -compromised, if the customer is willing to accept the food might not be quite as fantastic as if it’s served moments after it’s been made.

A few restaurants in Toronto refuse to offer take-out to immune-compromised customers. I find it’s not accommodating, from my point of view.

There are, of course, plenty of other places to get take-out.

There’s one restaurant where I asked if I could have take-out, and the social media person said I should bring all my friends and family for a big group dinner inside their restaurant. After I had told her I could not dine inside.

I think there’s a spectrum that runs from artistic intent/chef’s intent to giving paying customers what they want.

There are a number of Michelin-rated restaurants with patios, if you still want the nicer dining sit-down experience:

Actinolite
Grey Gardens
Pompette
Gia
Wynona
Lapinou
Henry’s

There are probably others I am forgetting.

Is there a back patio at Grey Gardens, or just a few tables in front sometimes?

I have tried Lapinou’s patio, and that was a good experience.

I didn’t enjoy Gia enough to return. I like the food at Enoteca Sociale, Viaggio and Dova a lot more.

I have been wanting to try Pompette and Henry’s, as well as Casa Paco.

Casa Paco’s patio is first come first served, not reservable in advance, and weather dependent.

I had Wynona on my list, but rarely cross the Don for food lately!

Still haven’t gotten around to Actinolite.

Actinolite only does outdoor/backyard dining between May/June to October/November … and then they’ll switch back to indoor because of colder weather. If you are not interested in their 5-course $125 menu, on most Wednesdays and Thursdays they do offer a $55 neighbourhood menu (3-course I think) but this one you should call to check first before you go …

Thanks!

Grey Gardens just has the front tables. Not fancy, but certainly fine by us.

Foxley is not on the Michelin list, but does have a patio in the back.

Another good option is Lake Inez’s Mystery Patio. Great food and lots of fun. I know it is way east for you.

Thank you.

I will get around to trying both at some point.

FK (St Clair West) has a patio.

Still on my to-try list.

It’s been interesting to find out that quite a few of the Bib spots that once offered to take-out are unwilling to accomodate with take-out this spring.
