The Rotunda @ Nieman Marcus, San Francisco, still going strong.
Yep - I got that impression from your post…And I thought my family was weird!
At this point Respectfully Declined would probably challenge me to a weirdness duel. I say there is room for both of us. A weird family has it’s perks. My perspective is delightfully and forever skewed.
Seedless rye is an abomination.
I know the feeling…
Those, but also the coconut impossible pie, made without Bisquick.

Kindred spirit. My sordid past has helped me with my chosen profession as a gunslinger. With cards. It comforts me to know that the sandwich was invented by some dude who didn’t want to stop playing to eat. Gamers mostly live on hot pockets and undoctored supermarket pizzas but when I go to a card shop there always seems to be a really inexpensive chinese take out hole in the wall. LIke in the same strip mall. Many of my triumphs were fueled by these places. I haven’t seen egg foo yong in awhile but I used to love that. Most gamers favor the General Tso’s chicken and who am I to disagree? Love old school americanized chinese food.
ROCKS! And best are its zillion renditions.
I like some sweets, but infrequently. Glad to hear Gino got some real cheese.
Now, I can enjoy a Gino’s Philly cheese.
Pumpernickel is essentially seedless. My fave.
Pumpernickel generally has no seeds on it. Why I like it. Just had a shock with caraway seeds as a young un. I still wince thinking about it.
Oh this was the mennonite barbecue sandwich. Sorry I have not mastered the art of getting the pic right. Because the family is mennonite they offer a lot of desserts. Chocolate cake with white icing, peanut butter cake with white icing, apple crisp, pear crisp on and on. And they have corn fritters with some syrup to dip them in, and sweet potato fries. They have not had birch beer on draft for awhile which is very disturbing. Jesse went to school, same grade as conan at the mennonite high school. Jesse’s wife is a year younger and sang in the choir with conan. So Jesse knows us through conan. Why am I telling you this? It explains how the universe has a sense of humor, My friend cdc was trying vegetarian for awhile. He still leans that way. Jesse’s is a great choice as he does not add his wonderful smoked pulled pork to his collards or his baked beans. Plus they usually offer garlic mashed potatoes. I was minding my own business eating a chopped brisket sandwich at his picnic tables. Cdc was vegging out. LIterally. Jesse appeared like a winged angel and with a huge grin gifted us half a rack of ribs. He even poured his sweet barbecue sauce on them for us. He had no idea of cdc’s vegetarian quest. I got most of the ribs but cdc could not resist sampling them. I love this place.
Oof.
Have not been to Ginos but when the weather was cooler cdc and I had a two day spree at the rtm. One of the cheesesteaks we inhaled had broccoli rabe on it. Delightful. Now Philly appreciates provolone. We got the Di Nic’s roast pork with broccoli rabe and provolone. Also the Italian roast beef with provolone, sauteed onions and peppers. The best part about the Italian roast beef is that it is still amazing the next day. DiNics sells their provolone to the big cheese shop at the rtm. No squirting cheese in sight.
I’m chaquita banana and I’m here to say don’t put bananas in your refrigerator today. So spam. Spam is having a moment. My wfd sandbox is full of good cooks and they keep me up on trends. I also understand that spam is really popular in hawaii but has anyone ever tried the recipe on the can? My SO made it for us many times. Gotta gotta have the whole cloves. How can a spam roast with frenched string beans and mashed potatoes not be inexpensive pure comfort on a plate? People still trim and french their string beans right? I used to always always french until I didn’t I still require fresh and trim. I cannot bear untrimmed ends. I am the least OCD person I know ok? It is just strong tradition. I feel like I am failing my ancestors.
Some of the pies easily available around here are hardly memory foods that are not in fashion. I live on the cusp of mennonite/pa dutch country and the huge mennonite supermarket about ten miles away always always has shoo fly pie and funny cake as well as 5,412 other desserts. Mennonites do not drink, smoke or gamble but they know how to enjoy the sweetness of life. I missed the country bbq and quilt auction event this year at the mennonite school Of course there were many quilts for sale. But dang it I missed out on their strawberry pies. Amazing.
I love ribs. We have a local store run by a great Mennonite family. They’re very good at showcasing local products at fair prices. BUT, we also get some PA treats like Lebanon bologna. Pretty good stuff. Their handmade candies are amaze. They have local honeycomb, which is my “cure” for allergies, which are terrible the year. Their spice selection is fresh and many. Very well priced spices. One of my favorite stops.
Sam is made down the road from. I pass Austin, MN all the time. Been to the museum, too. went on a school tour with seniors and they insisted, on the way back, we stop at the Spam museum. It was pretty cool. bananas in the fridge. Why, oh, why. I don’t fridge my eggs, either. Fresh string beans are heaven. They often don’t make it to the heat in my crib. I love them fresh.
Our Mennonite store is no different. Lots of great sweets. Good folks.
Sorry about the allergies. Mine are acting up too. I participated in the local Occupy movement in Lansdale back in the day and one of the protestors I learned was a beekeeper. Lived three miles or less from me. I should get me more of that honey.
That is so interesting about the spam. How delightful to speak of it in this context rather than email. Tastier too. Never developed a taste for lebanon bologna but maybe I should give it another shot. I am in a weird happy place here. It is crazy. Montgomery County Pa is top rated. I don’t care about the golf courses but we have tjs, bjs costco, whole pay check, lidl, aldi, wegmans, and a huge korean supermarket Assi. Then down the road is the honor system farm stand. Cannot wait. I could easily buy the eggs from the farm and not put them in the coolinator and we have a coupla dairies where I could buy raw milk. I really do have it all here and I feel lucky so lucky
