I’d be interested to see their Slow Cooker Pulled Pork recipe. I have a couple in mind that I might combine, but always interested to see something else.
Also - the Kabab Koobideh looks interesting - always glad to use ground sumac!
Voilà madame.
The problem with making pulled pork in a slow cooker is it tastes more like it’s been steamed rather than actually bbq’d. I realize they’re not calling it BBQ, but IMO the flavor of smoke adds something magical, and steamed pork butt just ain’t it. I hated to tell my Hawaiian sister-in-law that I thought kalua pork was bland, bland, bland, and that’s what slow cooker pulled pork tastes like to me, too. Not everybody has the means to cook a hunk o’ pork outdoors with fire, but even the dry heat of a low oven yields a better result than a crockpot. Again, my opinion only (but a closely held one).
I agree. I either smoke my butt first, then finish in the oven, or do it in the oven entirely (at least since our smoker bit the dust).
But I also don’t own a slow cooker, so I don’t even have the option.
12-year old me is cracking up!
What about adding a teeny tiny bit of liquid smoke? I usually despise that stuff as it can easily overpower. Or a smoked paprika added to the rub (which I do have)?
:::Raising my hand:::: That would be me. So…I looked up “pulled pork in oven” and Kenji has one. Which, unfortunately, calls for liquid smoke. I honestly think I tossed a little bottle I had purchased a long time ago, so that would be a new purchase. But I still couldn’t do the flambé part.

There is also this one that doesn’t call for liquid smoke that might work.
So I have options.

Currently running errands, but happy to share my favorite pulled pork recipe when I’m back home . No smoker necessary, but that rub is magic.
Here ya go:
Been using this recipe ever since I discovered it. I add a goodly amount of toasted fennel seeds bc I fucking love fennel seeds. You don’t have to, tho ![]()
