Meals on Planes

Question for the mods - why has this been moved to regional dining / Americas, ME, Africa?

@sck

Where was it before? I don’t see any record of it moved.

Oh… weird  it came up in my notifications with a little pen/edit sign, so I just assumed. My bad :pray:t3:

I thought this was in General, but I honestly didn’t even pay attention to the category until today.

Oh hell yes. My first job as an engineer/scientist was with K-C, down South in their Roswell, GA division. All of our flight preferences were ME, because K-C owned it at the time.

The a.m. flights had mimosas, cookies and lox on little bagel toast bits, with fruit and cheeses. The p.m. flights had substantially more. IIRC, all the seats on their planes were essentially business class.

Always loved flying Midwest Express, since the company was paying (itself) for it anyway.

We also had a deal where one of the company directors owned the preferred rental car company. You’d think that was ripe for abuse, but the costs charged against my projects were always market, and the service was 100X better than market. I’d get notice that I needed to go troubleshoot something in one of the factories, ask for car, and it would be outside Building 300 in 3 minutes, ready to go. They kept a fleet on-site.

I’m going on (weak) memory but do not think that @BKeats originally lodged this post in “Americas / Middle East/ Africa” (which would be an unusual combination, if so).

And seeing that BKeats’ original post shows 2 later modifications, it’s likely that some modification has happened, even if automatically.

Also @linguafood Natascha.

Ghost in the machine?

I used to take Midwest regularly from DCA to Omaha. You’re right about the cookies and the seats were very nice - roomy and well padded.

Yes! Presidents Day weekend 2007, I got stuck trying to leave Las Vegas (visiting my folks) as the NBA All-Star Game attendees were flying home. I was going to miss my flight back to PHL and US Air wanted to re-route me through Toronto, but of course I hadn’t brought my passport with me. Fortunately my mom got home, hopped on the computer, and found me a seat on Midwest. Best $800 cookie ever.

Made another trip across the country. Flew on Delta both ways. Early am departure from JFK. Breakfast options were eggs, yogurt bowl or French toast. I went with the eggs. Basically an egg patty with a slice of Canadian bacon and a side of Greek yogurt with some granola and fruit. Sort of surprised there wasnt any bread or rolls as clearly there was space on the tray along with butter and jam. Guessing catering messed up. And sadly the glass is just tomato juice. Had meetings from the moment I landed. Needed to stay sharp.

After rushing around with more meetings the following morning I got an afternoon flight back.

As I had nothing to do but go home when I landed I had a few whiskeys before the meal.

A chicken curry with salad and a cookie.

Curry was good. Had some heat. Went well with a couple glasses of Chardonnay. Then time for a nap for the rest of the trip home.

This is business class, right? Did you order non-standard meals?

Yes business. Did not order anything ahead.

AC gets a lot of hate, but I’ve found them to be pretty consistent. I’ve only had one major problem with them, but that was the pursers fault and after sending AC a scathing email I got a 20% discount for an upcoming flight.
I finally used it to upgrade to “business class “ for my trip to CDMX.
The flight was excellent the breakfast pretty damn good tbh.
I chose their world famous  parsley omelette served with chicken sausage, potatoes, salsa, yogurt and fruit + the bun was actually warm!

I used to oversee the sourcing, production, packing and logistics for 10-15,000 Delta meals out of JFK and La LaGuardia. The care and ingredient selection and the attention to detail in labelling and packing the meals was at a far higher standard than I ever imagined. Also, the dedication to deliver these meals on airport was astounding-- when the freight elevator went down, the team got inside the elevator shaft and formed a bucket brigade to make sure we got the trucks on the road at the right time.

Must have been a thing of beauty to watch :clap:t2:

Just the assembly and packing team was 45 people. That doesn’t include cooks, chefs, truck drivers, etc…

Amazing :star_struck:

That was a bit back, no? We read that United was the last to close its own catering kitchens. Good on you for the bucket brigade episode.
