MALVAN NYC [Brooklyn]

A newly opened spot from the Indian Table team, focusing on the Malvani food of the Konkan coast (going south from Mumbai towards Goa).

We decided to get a big format dish for the table (the goat leg), so we dialed back on everything else. (In retrospect, we could easily have doubled the apps, but we had no idea of portion sizes as their sister restaurant has large portions, and we also had the big goat dish coming.)

I thought it all good; forced to pick favorites, they would be the chicken, okra, pumpkin, and goat leg. The fish was delicious but, charlatan that I am, I don’t see the point of using an apparently hard-to-track-down squirrel fish when any thin, white fish would probably work. In fact, chef eric could fry up cardboard with that breading and spicing, and it would be delicious.

great to see everyone, @DaveCook @Ike and @fooddabbler , you were missed!

best,

ps @Saregama you’ve gotten really good with those photos!

The prawns on toast (aka shrimp toast) delivered the best flavors of the whole meal I thought. Bombay duck, tender fried "lizard fish was also very good. We had debated a bit about veg and other side dishes which came next - the pumpkin (not sweet and orange as you might think) dumplings in a coconut curry sauce were delicious, as were the shards of fried okra. Of the mains, the goat was good (and not gamy at all!) , the chicken gravy was excellent (but the dish would have been better with juicier white meat), the fish was well cooked, tasty but not exciting and the shrimp with the red chile gravy was again well cooked but not exciting. Overall it was a pleasing but very restrained style and I would have liked to see more punchy flavoring (not necessarily hotter) So good to see everyone and I am sure that this resto under Chef Eric and Samir’s leadership will do just fine. Hoping to go back for their thali menus and more of the side dishes, grilled stuff and apps!

ps these pictures were great, especially of the goat leg which was a beautiful presentation. We are enjoying the chawlichi usal (black eyed pea stew) which @saregama presented as a consolation prize for the limited veg selection we shared - thanks!
