Madrid

They were very tasty and really “clean” and pretty much grit free, unlike the ones I had at Sala de Despiece on my last visit to Madrid. So full of grit, the last few were barely edible.

You did well at La Montería. I love navajas simply grilled with AOVE and garlic a la plancha.
Did you take the tasting menu or did you dine a la carte?

A la carte, I wasn’t aware that there was a tasting menu. The two dishes and dessert were just perfect, and the server did me a favour by talking me out of an extra dish(the lamb thighs). I told you I could do a light dinner!:rofl:

Take out breakfast al fresco from Alma Nomad bakery.
Chocolate pistachio croissant
, outstanding, and some sort of raspberry/custard thingy that I got by mistake, but I’m sure it’s delicious (saving it for my lunch later)
Also picked up a slab of focaccia for my San Roman escalope sandwich that I’m also having for lunch
Cafe latte from Manolo Bakes, which is right across the street from the hotel, made more sense than to schlep it back from Alma.
The good thing about getting there just after opening is that there was no line.
The con is that not everything was ready, so no Kougin Amann for me
Gonna be a chill day today.

Day 3
Lunch on the terrace, and by lunch I mean the leftover San Roman schnitzel from the other day and some “peasant “ chips on the side :rofl:. Google translate is killing me, I think it either means pheasant or my guess is turkey stuffing flavour(campesinas)
The focaccia was the perfect vessel for the veal, maybe could have used a bit of mayo or something, but it was really tasty :yum:.
That’s a €18 sandwich right there, but no VAT or tip so it’s a bargain for sure.

Enjoy that terrace at the Sardinero! Did you buy those potato chips at Dia? Campesino=one who lives in the country (campo), a country person, or one who works the land.

Yes, I bought the chips, and tons of bottled water from Dia, it’s just down the street from me. So convenient
So the chips are tomato and onion flavoured, makes sense now considering there’s pictures of both those things on the packaging :rofl:

As a side, I took a walk down to the Mercado de San Miguel before lunch, and as you well know it was a bloody zoo in there and there’s construction going on as well which didn’t add much to the ambience.
I was in there for about 2 minutes and left to go check out Primark. Also a zoo, but at least it has 4 floors and tons of great bargains if one is looking for them.

That’s so surprising for Spanish – I would have thought it would be mostly spot on!

Me too, but maybe it’s the way the menus are written?? Had me lol-ing a few times.

Yep, El Mercado de San Miguel is always a zoo, and the last time I walked by it was so crowded that people were sitting on the concrete steps outside eating their purchases, as one could barely walk around inside. We last there for about 2 minutes as well.

And your evening dining…??? Looking forward to the report!

Yeah, I guess there’s also food terminology and context that could confuse a straight translation

Good thing it’s “free “

If you see a bag of “Bonilla a la Vista” potato chips, they’re irresistible. The very best and you can’t just eat one.

I was there on my last visit to Madrid, got there just before opening and it was much much better.
Dinner tonight is at La Lloreria, very excited , late lunch at Casa Orellana before the Sara Baras show tomorrow , might just skip dinner afterwards. Cancelled my reservation at Menudeo for Saturday, might grab a pizza close to the hotel, going out for dinner every night can take its toll

Is Dia a nation wide chain, or just Madrid?

It’s nationwide, as are Alcampo, Mercadona…Hipercor de El Corte Inglés.

We saw the recent Sara Baras show----she’s fantastic! We’re SB groupies!

Speaking of markets, there was an article in my in box today about dining inside the traditional Madrid covered markets-----it’s quite “the thing”.

Some noteworthy, inexpensive to moderate market nosheries-
La López, Sincio, Asian Army, Cutzamala in the Mercado de Antón Martín
Kitchen 154, Miga Cana, Taberna Sacra, *Tripea in the Mercado de Vallehermoso
Casa Dani, Oh Dèlice Bistró, Triperito, Cebreros in Mercado de la Paz
Barra Cruda in the Mercado de Ibiza
La Taberna de La Ancha, Juancho´s BBQ in the Mercado de San Antón
Insurgente in the Mercado de Chamberí

Nice, I might try to head over to one of those markets, weather permitting :grimacing:. Any pizza joint recommendations in my hood? I know I shouldn’t be eating pizza whilst on vacation in Spain, but ones gotta do what ones gotta do. Nothing fancy, just good pizza :pizza:.

Pizza,
As I posted to tigerjohn, the bakers of Alma Nomad have just this week opened their new place, Pizza Pronto, at Santa Feliciana 4, near the Plaza de Olavide. I would go there and maybe since it’s very close by, you can hit up Alma Nomad again and maybe find the Kougin Amann.
