Lunch 2024

Pappardelle with bolognese ragu, ricotta and Parmesan.
Little gem romaine lettuce salad vinaigrette, dessert was a mega meringue (cookie) made with cocoa and a dash of cinnamon.

Oooh! HO’s on a pasta roll it seems  Looks delicious.

But what’s the stuff in the bottom pic?

Great big meringue cookies, utterly delicious. I posted details in the “what are you baking” thread.

That’s one epic merengue cookie!

Exactement! Ottolenghi (London) started a trend for oversized meringues a while ago. I’ve had baseball sized raspberry ones in France…it’s a thing :joy:

A new bakery in town had crookies on offer, I sh!t you not. No interest in those, but trends are trends

David Lebovitz had a column on them in Paris and said people are waiting in line for them. They looked pretty awful! No appeal whatsoever, but as my grandmother said with a slight Irish brogue, “ no accounting for taste said Mrs Murphy as she kissed the cow”.

Way to ruin a perfectly good croissant.

Oh yes! Only Mae West could get away with …” too much of a good thing, is a good thing”.

A few years ago cronuts were a thing in Ottawa. People were all over them. Sometimes I wonder who comes up with these ideas

We have a new bakery in Ottawa called Holey Confections that makes the biggest donuts I’ve ever seen. Even though I lost my taste for sweets awhile ago I would seriously love to try one of their donuts.

Suzy Q Donuts used to have a table at one of our farmers markets and they sold maple bacon donuts. They are like crack. My shopping trips at that market waned after awhile however I fully intend on frequenting it this summer. I hope they have donuts for me…

Cronuts were developed by Dominique ANSEL at his bakery in SoHo, NYC. He is very inventive and also popularized individual Kouign-amann.

This looks great

I remember trying to get a Cronut on several trips to Dominique Ansel in SoHo, but they were always sold out. I did try his DKA a few times.

That style is the predominant type of Kouign Amann in Toronto now.

I have tried a Cruffin, from the FarmBoy grocery stores in Ontario.

There are at least a dozen bakeries in Toronto selling Crookies right now. I’m avoiding sugary carbs and allowing myself cheesy or savory carbs, so I haven’t tried a Crookie yet. There’s a coffee shop/ Japanese pastry shop 200 yards from my apartment selling them right now .

I go for epic long walks when I visit NYC, and stock up on treats at several bakeries for my trip home and for home. I know I also tried the granola, and maybe an eclair. It was fine, could have better, but at least an 8/10 for me, but I’m not a hard marker. I like most baked goods unless they’re awful.
I went through a phase where I was buying granola at every fancy Bakery as a souvenir, in Montreal, NYC, Calgary.

This past Xmas, that fancy granola buying phase, that lasted about 8 years, came to an end, when an expensive bakery in Toronto sold very mediocre granola, pecans slightly rancid.

Now I mostly buy coffee beans from local roasters as my souvenir , and occasionally locally made jam, when I travel around.

I, on the other hand, am a tough sell :joy:

Or to quote Anna Quindlen/the movie One True Thing, “more is more.”
