There are myriad small tomatoes in my supermarket nowadays, some with hefty price tags. The pedestrian cherry and grape varieties usually don’t have much “tomato” flavor but recently I had a salad at a good restaurant and the tomatoes were excellent. I asked the owner and he said "they came from the produce market. I like the larger “Campari” tomatoes in the off-season but I’d like to find a consistently good tasting small tomato. Any suggestions? Thanks!
The Wild Wonders mix of cherry tomatoes in multiple colors is my most frequent supermarket buy when it’s not tomato season. They’re also greenhouse grown under the Sunset Farms brand, like the Campari tomatoes you mention.
That’s usually what I get too!
Interesting! The one time I picked those they were devoid of any flavor.
My safe bets off season: kumato or indeed those extra $$$ flavor bombs / honey bombs (there’s a couple of varieties, some are round, others drop-shaped - both are good). Expensive AF but totally worth it.
Yes to the little flavor bombs. I was given some this summer that a friend had grown. Ate them like candy - straight out of a bowl.
In NW Montana we have locally grown grape tomatoes that are outstanding! So sweet and “tomatoey”. I don’t like regular tomatoes and even some heirloom tomatoes seem to be emphasizing appearance over flavor of late.
Absolutely can see that. I know I’m rolling the dice when I purchase greenhouse grown tomatoes in the off-season. I’m buying a memory of summer and, well, hope.
Was disappointed in “flavor bomb.” Reliably enjoy Campari.
I picked up a larger container at Sam’s Club and they were shit. I’ve not had a bad experience with the smaller packages. TBH, these actually look more like baby camparis, which are hit or miss for me.
Damn maters >shakes fist<
At least be grateful you’re not old enough to have endured the cellophane tubes of 3 hard, “red”, tasteless tomatoes that were the only tomatoes available in the produce aisles of supermarkets in the ‘60s.
I’ve had plenty of mealy, flavorless, bag o’water tomatoes from the Dutch greenhouses in the 70s and 80s, thank you very much
I’ve always found the NatureSweet Cherubs to be tasty. A grape tomato, they are a product of Mexico.
