Ditto to your story except mine was Hostess bread and treats in East Brunswick NJ. My buddy lived right up the block from their bakery and the smell alone contained 100 calories per whiff. We would often go and “buy” direct from the drivers as they stocked their trucks for their routes.
(yes “buy” means one guy would look out as the other, the fastest one, would pull whatever they could off the carts when nobody was looking. That’s Jersey for “buying”, kind of sort of the same thing as if falling off the back of a parked truck)
I’m responding to your post that starts “Oh, sweet”, but was not sure when you originally posted it. I see now it was October 8th, but in response to something posted in response to something in September. Whatever. It seemed important a few hours ago, but not anymore…
Along those lines, my late ex lived in SF, out in the avenues in the early 70’s. Boudin bakery was just around the corner, and they would wheel huge racks of just-baked sourdough out onto the sidewalk to cool late at night. There were many late-night grabs of the bread – in fact some meals were planned around it.
Great meals (at restaurants, family or friends’ homes) that not only had great food that I could not/would not ever make at home, but was a life changing experience that was added to my memory database forever
Dinner at my brother’s house, who loves to cook as a hobby, but whose food is more unique, more delicious than 5 star Michelin chefs at the best restaurants in the world

The short version? Everything authentic from the country that the evening theme is about.
Not only the food and drink, but the utensils, plates, platters, cooking methods, the way the food/drink is served, etc. He cooks the most outrageous meals that country is known for and makes it as authentic as possible. Let’s put it this way: I’ve had very odd things on my plate, but all exceptionally delicious.
He travels the world - eating at the top Michelin restaurants (even paid $1000 for a meal - per person - in China) and then tries them out in his own kitchen. It’s amazing!
I’m currently in post-op recovery from back surgery a couple of weeks ago, hence my absence from the site. Looks like I have a bit of catching up to do.
My appetite and taste has really taken a hit from the meds I’m consuming. When I gained consciousness after surgery I asked for a cup of coffee and a Milky Way. After two sips of the coffee and a bite of the candy bar, I realized this was going to be a slog getting my foods appreciation back in order. Highlights of my first meals home, were a terrifically made Lasagna from HS #1:
