[Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia] Taan Thai at Sunway Velocity Mall, Cheras

Taan Thai is a groundbreaking restaurant of sorts where mall eateries are concerned in Malaysia: for here is a serious food destination, where as much care and attention are put into the preparation and cooking of their dishes as for a proper fine dining Thai spot.

Another very special feature of this restaurant is the presence of Trakool “Korn” Yodsuk, perhaps the most influential Thai chef in Kuala Lumpur in the past decade and a half, and the former Executive Chef of the hyper-popular La Moon, and the spectacular but now-defunct Erawan before it.

We started off with some iced Thai milk tea.

Our lunch options:

  1. Mieng kham - Thai betel leaf wrap with house signature caramelised fermented shrimp paste dressing. An absolute delight, with the freshest ingredients used to construct these bite-sized morsels.

  2. Seafood tom yum

  1. Pla neung manao - steamed seabass bathed in a spicy, tangy garlic-lime sauce.

  2. Yam kor moo yang - Isan-style grilled pork-neck spicy salad with ground toasted rice.

  3. Kaeng keaw wan gai - Thai green curry with chicken, egg plants and pea eggplants.

  4. Gaeng lueang hoi krang - this Thai yellow curry with blood cockle dish is a faithful adaptation of one of Chef Korn’s signature dishes.

  5. Khao soi nuea - Northern Thai-style curried beef, served with two types of egg noodles: boiled one in the gravy, then topped with crisp-fried noodles and garnished with chopped purple shallots, pickled mustard greens, and fresh lime. Also available with curried chicken.

  1. Dessert: Tub tim krob bingsu - a skillful rendition of the traditional Thai red ruby with jackfruit strip dessert, but in a Korean shaved ice form.

Terrific meal - the best Thai we’d tasted in a long while.

Wow. My mouth is watering! I only discovered mieng kham a couple of years ago at our favorite Thai place in Berlin.

You eat so well! :star_struck:
