[Kuala Lumpur] Chinese-Muslim roti from Mee Tarik Lanzhou, Jalan Sultan

Mee Tarik Lanzhou is a Mainland Chinese Hui Muslim-run eatery on Jalan Sultan in downtown Kuala Lumpur. The chef outside the shop was making one of more popular street-side snacks trending in KL nowadays: Chinese Muslim roti.

The food item in question is actually a crisp-fried, stuffed flatbread known as π—΄π˜‚π—Ό π—Έπ˜‚π—Ά (Chinese: 鍋盔) in China. Originating in Shaanxi province, the name literally translates to β€œpot helmet”, as it was supposedly invented by a labourer who cooked flatbread in his iron helmet over a wood fire. The food item dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907AD).

The π—΄π˜‚π—Ό π—Έπ˜‚π—Ά is traditionally presented as a gift by a grandmother to her grandson when he turns one-month-old (Chinese: 滿月), a traditional custom among the Han Chinese.

What was the filling?

We saw lots of small carts with signs like this when we visited KL last year. Is it the same thing?

Chopped chicken or beef - both heavily-spiced with a cumin-based rub. No chilis.

Yes, these ones - they seemed to have taken KL by storm. Amazing, because Malaysians normally demand quite a bit of chili-heat in their food, but these Muslim rotis are never spicy-hot.

I’d not really tried a lot of these, only at 4 places so far, and the filled breads tend to be rather bland and stodgy.

The only place which I like is this insanely busy one at Bukit Bintang:
