As I was opening a can of tomatoes tonight with my Kuhn Rikon can opener, I thought what an aesthetically pleasing, brilliant design. Do you have any kitchen gadgets or equipment that have been almost life-changing?
I know this sounds almost stupid… but I really like using this Hamburger chopper thing. It’s great for ground beef, chicken or pork. When you need to fry up some ground and you want small pieces, this think makes it so easy.
Microwave
I was thinking of getting one of those!
I would say dishwasher, stick blender, and vacuum sealing.
I found that one at my local Dollar Tree – only $1.25!!
I know!! I love mine!! It’s so great for making anything where you need ground chopped beef!! Like chili!
Love my KA mixer. Kiwi knives have very simple, but functionally excellent designs. Fit my hand perfectly. But I do think KA appliances fill the aesthetic pleasure spot. Classic American styling. like a Harley!
I have a flat edged bamboo spatula/scraper thing that is safe for non-stick and is just the right stiffness to scrape bits and fond. It’s great for flat-bottomed pans the same way that those curved edge spatulas are great for woks.
I have a slightly different one - three blades - that I also use to break up sliced or diced onions when cooking them. Faster and easier than, say, a wooden spoon, and pieces don’t fly out of the pan.
I need to find one of these! The ones I’ve seen are either slanty or rounded.
I’d also like to add this Sandwich Maker… If you have two slices of bread, a little butter or margarine, and something to put in the middle… you have a hot lunch.
When I was taking care of Neighbor #2, I could microwave and chop up some leftover meatballs, a slice of cheese and a squirt of ketchup to make a very tasty hot pocket.
I also made desserts with it. Chop up some apples (or whatever fruit you have) add a little brown sugar, a pinch of cinnamon and you have a hot tasty apple dessert… bonus points if you have a little vanilla ice cream to put on top.
I’ve also done lentil hot pockets for vegetarian nights. I think this could be vegan with the right margarine and vegan cheese.
That my friend is what Ozzies call a jaffle maker.
I like “Jaffle Maker” better, I think that is what I’ll start calling it.
Thanks!
[No snark intended] Is this enough of an improvement over a potato masher to justify having one in addition to said potato masher? I don’t have a lot of storage space to spare, and the business end of this chopper seems like it’d eat up a lot of real estate in a drawer (Mrs. ricepad is fundamentally opposed to countertop storage of most things).
A potato masher is usually metal or at least mine is and I don’t want to use a metal utensil in any of my frying pans – especially the non-stick ones.
This “chopper” thing seems to really tear and separate the meat, nicely. Unlike the round tines on a potato masher, this chopper thingy has a slight edge to the tines and does a “slightly” better job.
Its also fun to use…
I might head over to Dollar Tree and see if I can find one!
OK, help me out here… You make hamburger with this thing? Or do you mix with it?
I think you use it to break up the grounds as they cook. Could be useful for some things like Cincinnati chili and taco filling especially.
You chop up the ground meat when you want to make something like chili or meat sauce.
