Kensington Market report [Toronto]

I tried Veggie D’Light today, a vegan Jamaican restaurant on Baldwin.

I tried the small curry on brown rice and quinoa, with a little seitan and a little jackfruit.

The brown basmati rice and quinoa is cooked to a poi- like texture. The curry was good. This portion cost $15.

I also picked up a rotisserie chicken at Sanagan’s.

I stopped at Sanagan’s to buy some meat. I’m posting photos to keep track of the prices this year .
.

I also stopped by for my cardamom latte at Fika.

Kannelbullar and a carrot cake cupcake to go, from Fika, for my dining companions.

I love their Swedish cinnamon buns. I try to eat vegan but make an exception for these about once or twice a year. No others will do.

I have a really good vegan recipe for them

How wonderful. Would you be kind enough to share? My baking skills are pretty poor but I might be able to convince someone to help.

Thank you!

Hooked is closing its Kensington store at the end of the month. I’d noticed selection had been getting smaller, and usually just one person working. I’d thought the store might not be the best fit for Kensington; the owner suggests Kensington is no longer a good fit for her store. https://torontolife.com/food/the-sad-truth-is-that-kensington-market-isnt-healthy-anymore-why-this-neighbourhood-fishmonger-is-closing-up-shop/

Echoes others’ thoughts about the Market.

That’s too bad that Hooked is closing. It was a little too upscale for the average shopper at the market

Cost to Coast on College St in Little Italy has good prices and quite a few sustainable fish options available .

There’s still one affordable Portuguese fish market on Baldwin that’s in business. I prefer Newport on Geary.

I can’t tell you how good these are and they’re relatively easy to make. https://www.lazycatkitchen.com/vegan-kanelbullar-swedish-cinnamon-buns/

This place took over the space where Maple Leaf Doner and Our Spot once operated.
It’s on Baldwin West of Sanagan’s Meat Locker.

Made-Rite’s Sausage Egg and Cheese on a Kaiser.

Open Mon to Sat.

I like the idea of using a Kaiser or sliced bread, instead of English muffins or biscuits, in Breakfast Sandwiches. This was a little too much Breakfast Sandwich for me. I like the BLTs at MadeRite and I plan to try the Hollywood Club at some point (chicken salad club).

The MEC is their Mortadella Egg Cheese on a Kaiser, for anyone keen on Mortadella right now. Mortadella sandwiches seem to be having a moment.
