James on Main - Hackettstown, NJ

We enjoyed a sensational dinner at James on Main. It was our first but definitely not last time at this NJ Monthly top 30 restaurant. The food and service was outstanding. I highly recommend it. We have to find a way to add this to our regular rotation. It was well worth the almost 1 hour drive.
There is a choice of a two or three course tasting menu. We decided on the three course tasting menu. For the first course we enjoyed an excellent beet salad with pickled vegetables, toasted pumpkin seeds, in a champagne vinaigrette, as well as an awesome smoky Spanish Jamon cured ham with wood fired maitake mushrooms and pecorino romano. For the second course we had an outstanding duck leg confit with house made sausage, flageolet, pickled white asparagus, and beet mustard, as well as shrimp dumplings with miso and chili oil. For the 3rd and final course I had an outstanding wood fired double cut duroc hog chop with whisky maple glazed roots, homemade spaetzle, and sweet potatoes. Mrs. P enjoyed scallops and peekytoe crab. It all went great with an outstanding Spanish Priorat.

Firstly, what a beautiful red wine from Falset, Tarragona (D.O. Priorat). Some of the best reds in the country. If you ever have a chance, do have a Priorat aged red from BODEGAS (winery) ALVARO PALACIOS …

The dishes look extraordinary and I like your write up ! Exceptionally descriptive and a wonderful read.

Have a lovely day ahead.

I don’t get out that way much, but I went to Ort Farms for some fresh berries a couple weeks ago and then to the Long Valley Pub for lunch. I plan to return for more and will check out James on Main,

What Gulf are they from? I’ve lived on the Gulf of Mexico all my life and no prawns but very large brown and white shrimp.

I’m sorry I don’t know what Gulf they are from but they were huge. They were just described as wood fired Gulf prawns on the menu.

Never had blue rare American Bison and have never seen it on a menu here … How would you rate it in comparison to blue rare Black Angus ? Are they similar in taste ?

Looks like a dynamic lunch or dinner …

Have a lovely summer.

Thank you!
It was very good and had a nice char to it. I had it prepared medium rare. It is pretty similar to a black angus steak.
