Just thought of another UK classic that uses jam: Trifle
Brits must have had a lot of jam to use up…
I like making this spiced apple butter to freeze, and then use it in the bottom of apple pies or tarts.
Also, this butterscotch brownie is a winner and will accommodate a great variety of jam. It’s not unlike the Split Seconds in its simplicity, but has a good jolt of cardamom.
I make a Ukrainian Pliatsok (cake). This is my favorite recipe and I sub the can for a layer of my homemade jam.
That looks delicious!
Blueberry babka. I used up about 1 and 1/3 half-pints of jam. A bit slippery to assemble, but worth it.
Deets on the baking thread here.
Beautiful!

So interesting.
Yes to pliatsok. My mom always made it with plums and also with apples
Having just finished our bon maman advent calendar has me wondering about gooseberry jam. There was no sample of it. My mother had gooseberry bushes in Montréal and we use to have this jam. Never really see it here in ontario. A check on Amazon.ca shows some jars but unavailable. A 550 grm jar from Poland is 550 grms is $105. Canadian. Can you believe this.
I tried a yellow gooseberry jam and ended up with a lot of seeds, not too successful !
I made gooseberry jam one year, because we grew them (just for fun). I didn’t care for the jam, but the generation just senior to me loved it - I guess it was something they grew up with.
I like them au natural but the jam was a complete bust as far as I was concerned! So many other fruits to use for delicious jams!!
I guess if i ever see a jar that is reasonably priced i might buy it just to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks for the replies.
My mother has made gooseberry jam, but I think that it was mixed strawberry/gooseberry??
I see gooseberry jam occasionally (Bonne Maman as well as other brands) in London ON and in Toronto.
I have a 3 or 4 year old gooseberry bush. Some caterpillars destroyed the leaves in 2024 and I didn’t get any berries. I harvested maybe 25 gooseberries in 2023.
I like Darbo, an Austrian brand, for most less common Euro berry jams. It’s usually cheaper than Bonne Maman. It’s available at the Polish stores and some upscale indie stores in London.
@Stef_bakes this green gooseberry from England is ~$11 CAD. https://well.ca/products/tiptree-gooseberry-conserve_294515.html
The D’Arbo jam I buy most is blackcurrant. (Not jam, but their elderflower cordial is also very good.)
We like their lingonberry sauce, too.
Thanks willl look out for them
