Italian food and drink in the [Greater Toronto Area]

I agree, the pizzas are good.

I was late in trying Terroni. My first visit was to the Adelaide location around 2005, and we had pizza. I was a Price St semi regular from around 2012-2020, and I became a Queen St W semi-regular when I moved further downtown in 2023.

My most recent visit was to the Spaccio on Sackville St near the Distillery.

One of my friends is a big Terroni fan, and we often split an app, a salad, a pasta, and a pizza.

I also accept their rules, @mrsleny. Their restaurant, their rules. LOL.

Interestingly, Terroni frozen pastas are sold at gourmet shops far from the GTA. I can buy them at the Flour Mill in St Mary’s..They’re pretty good. Available in Toronto at Sud Forno and Spaccio locations, and probably elsewhere.

I haven’t been impressed with Terroni for quite some time. Over priced, tiny portions and service on the meh side. I’ll spend my money elsewhere :man_shrugging:t2:

Which places do you like better, that are more generous?

I don’t find the portions small. I think Terroni might have bigger portions than Bar Vendetta or Taverniti.

portions at Terroni are bigger portions than portions at Viaggio (Viaggio is my favourite right now), but different type of Italian restaurant

I don’t go out for Italian much anymore as I can cook pretty much everything they offer at home. I tend to spend my money for dining out on stuff that I can’t be arsed to make at home, like most Asian/Middle Eastern cuisine.

You’re being a bit like one of those people on Reddit who says they can make the same breakfast sandwich at home for 2 bucks

I do eat a fair amount of Italian lately because I seem to be able to do Italian restaurants without overdoing the salt and eating too much.

I have found that portions have shrunk at all restaurants, and I get it, but that doesn’t mean I have to support it.

We all can make stuff cheaper (and often or sometimes better stuff) at home.

A $50 dinner at Terroni or wherever is my break from cooking for less at home.

I still dine frequently at La Bettola - I typically grab a seat at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere. I’m always satisfied by their fresh pastas like the tonnarelli cacio e pepe, and I also appreciate their wines by the glass, with a selection of varietals and regions beyond the usual Pinot Grigio, Chianti etc.

I’ve always liked La Bettola. I rarely dine downtown these days. I should revisit in 2026.

I like eating at the bar, in general, when I’m alone . This is something I have not done at La Bettola.

It’s not always about making it cheaper, but making it ā€œhealthier ā€œ for me. I can control what goes into my meals when I cook at home and that’s very important to me at this stage in my life. I can afford to eat out numerous times a week, but I also want value for my money and these days I’m not finding that very often.
But like you said, we all need a break from cooking and cleaning occasionally.

That is what I am working on. Lately, I am finding a nicer upscale meal from a place like Terroni, or fancier, like Viaggio, is keeping me more on track than most of the other things I have been ordering for takeout over the past 6 years.

As you guys have seen, I try a lot of places.

Lately, I haven’t been tolerating some restaurant dishes very well. I keep a list of what works and what doesn’t.

Most recently, I had fairly cheap take-out in Toronto a couple nights in a row, and both nights I was up chugging water all night.

Which disrupted my sleep when I was already short on sleep. It was my fault in terms of what I ordered, and I had seconds of a dish I knew seemed a bit salty.

I also had the same kind of reaction in Brockville after take-out souvlaki and Greek Salad about a month ago.

I hadn’t had this happen after restaurant food in about 3 years (really salty Italian meal in Ottawa in Oct 2022), and it has only happened to me maybe a dozen times in the past decade (Me Va Me and Byblos stand out), so to have it happen 2 nights in a row, and also last month, has made me add a few more restaurants and a few more restaurants dishes to my avoid list.

I am planning to order a few more upscale meals and make more healthy food at home when I’m in Toronto, and order less cheap take-out when I’m in Toronto, in 2026.

For anyone interested, I saw a social media post showing their cookbook for sale at Costco. Not sure which store. Seems to be about $10 less than at Terroni.

@ Phoenikia … I’m sorry to hear about your food intolerances and I admire you for being adventurous enough to eat out as often as you do. I’d love to do the same. But due to my own food preferences/issues, I hardly eat out at all so I am very grateful I get to live vicariously through yours and everyone else’s posts here

Thank you Hungry Onioners!

I get it. I love travelling vicariously through a number of HO’s posts, especially @ZivBnd’s and @digga’s posts, since I haven’t been traveling beyond Ontario and Quebec since 2020!
