An upscale Italian shop in Little Italy in Toronto was carrying 3 flavours, at Xmas, too. They were on sale after Xmas so that might be why they’re current sold out.

I will just leave this here. It may not be the only chili crisp oil, but I think it may be the best. I put that stuff on everything! Ramen is just not the same without it.

A somewhat exhaustive (but interesting!) survey of instant ramen by three ramen chefs. My fave comment: “It tastes healthy in a not good way.”

Ha, I watched this a few weeks ago and thought it was a lot of fun. They did a frozen dumplings version too that is good, but with different professional chefs.

I found it hysterical that they could just recognize a lot of them, like, these ramen chefs have eaten a lot of instant ramen! And I also appreciated detailed assessment of the noodles and the broth. I’d like to have this skill!

Agreed! There are so many brands of instant noodles and ramen though, I want a continuation and for them to work their way through a good chunk of them. I want them to also review instant udon, vermicelli/rice noodles, the glass noodles, pho, etc.

I really like KiKi noodles which I believe were made in Hong Kong but haven’t found them in my supermarket for years now :(. They were more like premium instant noodles and were sun-dried rather than deep-fried.

If you’re Asian, you could probably recognize many of them. Ramen is like an essential food group for many of us (I’m Korean). Plus, the chefs are ramen chefs, correct? Not sure why it’s “hysterical.”

I recognize many of them myself, and instant ramen was an essential food group for me as well, when I was younger. But I’d be hard pressed to tell Maruchan from Top Ramen from Nissin Cup Noodle. Maybe you should watch the video to see for yourself. Because THEY seemed to think it was pretty funny, too.

Having watched a bunch of videos from the series, I think the producers maybe give them a list of possible brands or products or something. It’s just a little too convenient that all the chefs are able to pinpoint the brands blind, IMO.

That may be, but it’s still a neat trick to tell the cheap ones apart, even if you know they’ll be in the mix.

I agree! I was also surprised that Maruchan bested Top Ramen.

I think those are Taiwanese noodles - or at least inspired by the noodles available in Taiwan, but not sure where they are manufactured. Could be HK. You can find them at the local 99 Ranch. They are more expensive than the average instant noodles, though that image itself is evolving. I grew up eating instant noodles as a quick lunch or snack, and these were always considered cheap and fast, usually with super salty, MSG-heavy sauces or soups. Most were well under $1 decades ago, and those same brands are still hovering around $1 to under $2. This idea of premium instant noodles that are $3-5 a pack still blows my mind, even though I acknowledge that many of them are far better tasting and just a smidge “healthier” (and I use that term loosely - maybe less chemically manufactured is a better description) than what they were before.

I agree. They are definitely Taiwanese, They are still manufactured in Taiwan (not Hong Kong, not China).

Well, good. I am actually surprise how expensive they are. I know many of these Taiwanese dried noodle are not cheap, but Kiki noodles are on the expensive among them. In all honesty, they are not instant noodle. They are really regular noodles come with a sauce package. The dried noodles do not work any faster.

Think of it more like a pasta package came with dried pasta and some pasta sauce – the noodle does not work any faster.

Some of the Thai noodles I like are also noodle kits, rather than instant noodles.

$3 CAD per pack is sort of low average for a better quality noodle pack in my experience. Although, I mostly buy Japanese instant noodles and I might be ignoring some of the cheapest noodles because they don’t catch my attention.

The Prima Taste noodles cost more than that per pack.
