Indian Mango season in New Jersey

Just curious if any New Jersey HOs are eating these mangos. They sound wonderful!

I don’t think we’ve been lucky enough to get them in PA, strangely enough.

We only get ataulfo mangoes from Mexico, which tend to show up in our Asian markets (and Sam’s Club) around March, and are often snarfed up by the case.

I love them, but have been told that Alphonsos are far superior in taste.

We got them all the time in Western PA, and I found them pretty easily in the Philadelphia area too. They sell them at Indian groceries and at some health food stores. The early to mid-summer Alphonsos are way too sweet for me. I prefer the less sweet, more complex-tasting late season ones. A nice Ataulfo is beautiful too.

I ordered some alphonso mangoes about a decade ago. It was like eating mango concentrate. Amazing, but so expensive I have yet to repeat the experience.

How late is late? We might be in Philly for a short trip late October (also hoping to stock up on Lao sausages while down there).

You won’t get any Indian mangoes in late October.

Bummer.

The season in India starts in March and ends in June. I’ve had yummy Alphonsos there as late as early August. Most Alphonsos sold in the US are from California where it’s a super short season, just June-July. But micro-growers in places like Texas, Florida, Georgia, etc., seem to have them into July and even August. October might be pushing it, but I’ve purchased US-grown Alphonsos in Albuquerque as late as September. If there’s an Indian grocery anywhere near you, call them. Even if they don’t normally stock them, they will probably know how to get them in your area. When my parents lived in Pittsburgh, a store there called Bombay Emporium had an annual buyer’s club for imported Alphonsos. My Dad would get a case every May for much less than the grocery store price.
