If I find Iceberg Lettuce on clearance, I make Lettuce Soup. My immersion blender made quick work of two heads into a really delicious soup. I never thought this would taste so good, but it was GREAT!!
Yes!
4 cups lettuce
1 medium onion
3 cups broth
1 teaspoon curry powder
1/8 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
black pepper to taste – I’ve liked this for a long time.
See, you combined two separate foods in your tirade that I never would. I don’t want Belgian endive on my ham & cheese sandwich, or oak leaf, or baby spinach (and plz leave that one out of my salads, too, mmkay?), or fancy sprouts.
I want a crisp, very subtly flavored counterpoint to the fattier ingredients like cheeses & meats, or chicken & avocado, or tuna salad… any more prominently flavored lettuce would be distracting to me.
That said, I do rarely use iceberg in my salads. Last night was an exception. A deliciously crisp, crunchy exception
We made it once as a cold soup - a sort of gazpacho. It was OK
I haven’t made it cold…
Sounds interesting, but I think I’d prefer it as a hot soup.
One of my favorite restaurant dishes is iceberg forward. (Crab Louie salad from Swan’s Oyster Depot).
I keep a head of iceberg lettuce in a Rubbermaid produce saver. Usually lasts a month+ if it’s a fresh, dry and clean going in….and remove anything that looks wilted or ready to go. Mostly used for sandwiches and burgers. Before getting the produce saver, it was kind of a hassle if you wanted a burger or sandwich. For salads I prefer spring mix or similar, either bagged or bag your own…but have to use it quick or it starts to rot and get slimy.
I often remember fondly the bespoke Tupperware iceberg lettuce keeper that was in our fridge… best argument ever for a “single purpose” piece of plastic!
I looked for a glass one but nothing that large to fit a head of lettuce. Nothing worse than getting ready to make a sandwich and…you find wilted or rotting lettuce.
Yea, you’d have to put it in a glass cake some and that would take up half your fridge.
I had one of those. It worked great.
I had one, too. Wonder what became of it … also had a ham keeper.
In 2022, an iceberg was at the centre of a political debate. Would it last longer than our then Prime Minister, Liz Truss.
Lettuce won.
+1 on the sandwich and US hardshell tacos. I stir fry with romaine, though. When i was wee, my favorite sammy was mayo and iceberg. I’ll slaw it with cabbage, too.
I remember that. The meme has sort of caught in here.
Sad to say, there have been items of produce forgotten in my fridge that could have stood in for longer-term tests.
I think there must have been a law: If you lived in an American suburb in the 60s, you had to have one of those Tupperware iceberg lettuce containers.
