Ice Cream, gelato, etc. [Toronto] [GTA]

I’m staying right next door to Soma on Brock. I’d had their hot chocolate on King Street before and didn’t rate it that highly. Anyway I went to Soma here and had buttertart gelato - delicious and very creamy, true to its name, even with bits of the pastry in it. I then sampled the Toki whiskey and loved it ( but it hasn’t come back again). The next time I ordered a single scoop two flavour - rhubarb ( perfectly tangy) and a chocolate which was everything chocolate ice cream ( sorry, gelato ) should be. Going to pop in again today, maybe try the affogato.

Their chocolate gelato has all the dark, bitter notes that a chocolate ice cream should have.

If you haven’t tried their Old School bar, it’s just chocolate nibs and cane sugar. I maintain a steady supply of this at work.

PS. Two things - had my go-to zabaglione generous kiddy scoop at Sicilian on College Never as good as in Torino but I’m nostalgic and it’s delicious.

Second, talking of Soma and hot chocolate - is there ANYWHERE that serves European style thick hot chocolate? If you’ve had it, you know… Or can I find the packets of Ciobar which is a home (weak, but in a pinch) substitute?

Apart from Soma, I have not see thick European style hot chocolate anywhere recently.

Giovane serves bicerin. Maybe they’ll make you a thick hot chocolate.

Eataly might serve it in the winter.

Chocosol on St Clair W might have it.

Ended up SOMA today as has been ages. Was busy for a weekday (distillery) still have the good stuff. Did a mix of toffee and nuts/peaches and cream combo. Very good wanted to try the blueberry basil as well but was too full

No photos but wanted to give a shout out to the extremely delicious Baker Bots near Bloor and Margueretta. It could be the best shop-made ice cream I’ve had in Toronto or is it gelato. Went by yesterday only to find it closed for the day. Where can I find àn over the top sundae - two flavours, whipped cream, tons of sauce, maraschino cherry and whatever else you can throw on it.

Glad you enjoyed bakerbots. It’s the same folks as bang bang ice cream in case you weren’t aware (sans the lineups in summer)

They claimed they make it themselves. Untrue then?

Yeah same owner for both.

I believe BakerBots does make the ice cream inside BakerBots.

I don’t do lines longer than 3 or 4 people ahead of me, so I only ever get ice cream at BakerBots.

Agree that both places are owned by the same people.

BakerBots makes other good things besides ice cream.

Does Bang Bang also sell lemon tarts and other pastries, or is it limited to scoops of ice cream, ice cream sandwiches and cookies?

No they don’t sell baked goods at bang bang ice cream that’s another reason I prefer bakerbots as some of their baked goods are worth a trek. Liking this area lately as monte bianco is here (I didn’t have the patience for sugo wait last time)

I think a post here might expedite the summer/Ice cream season :slightly_smiling_face:
I ordered the saffron pistachio ice cream from Super Parsian store. Went well and good thing is it might be available at other stores as well. The initial taste may overwhelm but after your taste buds adjust its a decent take on these flavor profiles. I would say this wouldn’t be out of place at a restaurant and for 32$ approx for 1.5L box could be considered indulgence
Here are a few pics

Was it very sweet? I’ve had their pomegranate ice cream with faloodeh, but it was so sugary I couldn’t finish it.

That’s a nasty, impure list of ingredients. Certainly somebody out there must be doing a better job.

Yup a very long list of ingredients and artificial flavors but unless someone’s is willing to put in the effort to get so these exotic flavors and mass produce that’s what you get. The store makes their own ice cream as well might be better in terms of ingredients

Yes quite sweet but that’s what I identify as normal for that region for ice cream no?

I recall quite liking the bastani at Venus Bakery. I never thought to ask about ingredients since they make everything from scratch. Worth the trip to Pharmacy & Lawrence.

Yes, very true. It’s still a shame that the flavour of the fruit is so obscured.
