One of my favorites!
Dinner at Le Club Chasse Et Pêche
Menu, which is not the same as online
Starters
Risotto
Grilled Octopus - tender octopus, grapes the perfect pop of sweet and texture, almonds provided crunch and flavor.
Buratta
Mains
Halibut; I hesitate to eat halibut because it is so easily overcooked, but I don’t think I have ever had better fish at a restaurant.
12 oz Veal , some on the bone, potato pave (last night’s “hot and solid”. Husband asked for medium and it was still juicy
Desserts
Maple eclair, popcorn ice cream - the eclair shell may have been something akin to maple sugar; it didn’t seem like it was made of flour
Strawberry, rhubarb, yogurt, “cake”. Very sweet, but you could still taste the fruit flavors, and it wasn’t too filling.
Cheese plate and bread
We are not really fine dining folk, but we really enjoyed this. Really.
Husband has gone rogue with the restaurant choices but I’m not mad about it.
Next up Atwater market and Verdun.
The Atwater market is my favourite market Mind you I haven’t been to Jean Talon yet. It looks like you are having a lovely trip.
Today was Atwater Market
Starting with Satay Brothers. Thank you for the recommendation @Phoenikia !
Then bookstores, pastry shops, and Pho in Verdun.
The Pho was perfect for today, which was cold for us Californians. Except there weren’t enough herbs and no fresh peppers.
Also, in a drugs store, a post office open on Sunday, “but only until 4 o’clock”
And dinner at Holder
Husband had French onion soup, with too much bread (not as good as at Mondavi).
…and halibut with risotto,
…which I thought was almost, if not as good as last night, but we had just eaten too much at that point.
I had a salad with buffalo buratta, and a “pastry” with toasted goat cheese. Daughter had some fish and chips. These were fine.
Almost too much…we found room for .a shared pineapple turnover
Right now we are living our best lives!
Looks like a perfect Sunday!
You’re most welcome
Delicious apples on the king’s road from Montreal to Quebec City.
Lobo
On to Deschambault for lunch.
La Dinette du Cap
Leek soup
Like a Mac sandwich but good . They make the bread on site.
The bagel, also made on site, is part of a “pastrami” sandwich.
Looks gorge, but I had to remind myself those are Canadian $ prices. Whoa.
What a wonderful meal for you two!
Love Atwater market!
I think we might have eaten from the same place a while back.
Dinner at Bistro Le SAM at Chateau Frontenac
Nice cocktail menu with several cocktails that were attractive, but sounded more interesting than the tasted.
Caesar and Waldorf salad . They were okay
Beautiful, generous cheese platter
Lovely, cooked mid rare, but not so interesting lamb
And long braised short rib that husband says was second best meal of trip
After a walking tour
… brunch at Restaurant La Buche (thank you @DrJohn )
…we went with a the brunch menu rather than the greatest hit.
I’m not a fan of sweet breakfast, and even the bacon was sweet, but I’m glad I tried the waffles.
Last night was dinner at Chez Boulay, described better by @DrJohn in this thread.
After apps including
ONION SOUP CAPPUCCINO STYLE, CROUTON WITH LOUIS D’OR CHEESE
Least filling of the three onion soups husband has tried so far, which I thought was a good thing. The cheese was on the bread and described as “very tasty stuff”, but not better than 1608. . Not called French onion, and instead had a “cappuccino style” topping.
FOIE GRAS TERRINE WITH BOREAL ANISE AND BIRCH SYRUP GALETTE, ROASTED ÎLE D’ORLÉANS STRAWBERRIES WITH CICELY CONDIMENT. The roast strawberries were a perfect foil for the richness of the terrine. I could have eaten more of those.
I also enjoyed Braised BEEF CHEEK, RATATOUILLE OF ÉLISABETH’S VEGETABLES WITH SWEET WOODRUFF, CHORON SAUCE AND CRISPY VEGETABLES beef cheeks, or at least most of it. After I was half done it felt like there was too much beef and not enough crispy vegetables and ratatouille.
and husband enjoyed the CHARLEVOIX CHICKEN BREAST, QUEBEC GRAIN RISOTTO WITH FRESH HERBS AND THALIA, BURNT LEEKS AND BUTTER WITH AMERICAN LARCH
The grain was not rice; husband said not chewy like farro. We don’t know what thalia and larch are, but there was something akin to a root vegetable he enjoyed. He said the chicken was “underdone” which means it was cooked perfectly. I tried a bite and would describe it that way.
Daughter had the ST. LAWRENCE REDFISH TEMPURA AND CAESAR-STYLE GRILLED CABBAGE SALAD WITH ROASTED CAMELINA
I did not read about the pastries through the back way until after, but we enjoyed “home made” ice cream recommended by our tour guide on the way home
.Today we finally got our hands on Kouign Amann, which has proven relatively unknown and elusive within walking distance of each hotel .
After trying here
Which was nice, but didn’t have any, or even seem to recognize a labeled picture, I googled for “Kougin Amman near me”, we finally called ahead and they held some while we raced here
Ahhh…
Later this morning on Île d’Orléans we tasted cassis and other forms of black currants.
Cider and ice wine
I don’t drink, but loved the “tasting notes”,
and enjoyed apple juice, apples, strawberries, and red raspberries.
I had a KA that looked almost identical in san diego a couple of months ago. So delicious!
Your QC trip looks like it’s going wonderfully!
You did well today! I love that Black Currant farm,
I buy their syrup.
What a great season you chose for your trip. Thanks to you, this is going on my list of possibilities for a future adventure.
I’m having a great time, way better than I initially expected, but all credit goes to husband and HO!
ETA We’ve also had some pretty awesome tour guides.
I decided not to bump up any old tipping wars threads, but this reminded me of one.
To be safe, and to get good service, as an English-speaking visitor from another province, I tip the same way at the same rate that I would tip in NYC or Toronto. The servers definitely appreciate it in my experience.
I guess that’s one way in which I don’t do “when in Rome”.
Ziggy brought up tipping in the province of
Quebec here: Quebec City - The Good, the Great and the Ugly
Thank you!
Agreed! Shrinkrap’s posts have me wanting to go! My husband has been suggesting it for years (he was born in Montreal). Next time I will say yes.
And that’s just the food!
Speaking of food, another tea service, this one at Dufferin at Le Chateau Frontenac
Rice pudding with pear and orange zest
A variety of teas; I had a “creamy Earl Gray” which steeps for about 5 minutes
Scones ( not American or at least not Southern Biscuits; more here) with blueberry jam, Devonshire cream (which I read was another name for clotted cream), and orange marmalade
And the three-tier tray called a “curate", ; sandwiches on the bottom and sweeter as you move up.
I liked the one at the Ritz a little better. They are fun, but I’ve had enough tea services for a while.
And for dinner, cancelled Chez Rioux & Pettigrew, and went to Restaurant Wong of all places, for “fusion Chinese”.
Wonton soup, Cantonese fried rice, beef and broccoli, spicy shrimp
Apparently we needed a break from local food.
There is a bike race today, and three cruise ships.
Unless you’re tipping at the outset, how is it affecting service?
If you don’t mind sharing, what have the tour guides been for? General sightseeing? Never thought of this for North America.
