I make it a point to pick up a few packages of natural casing dogs from the factory store every time I visit.
1 through 7 with 3 and 4 being the least interesting. Never experienced 8 or 9 but not worried about what I’m missing.
1? Uncooked?
My first hot dog revelation was at 12 in Atlantic City, after seeing Help! at a theater on the boardwalk. Stands grilling dogs to a tasty char, nothing like our bland boiled dogs back home. Probably a 6 or 7 on this scale.
It’d have to be 6/7 for me, too — not just to play into that stupid meme, btw, but it makes it even more fun ![]()
I would choose 4 or 5 but I have to admit that 6 looks interesting too.
My first experience of a steady diet of hot dogs was in DC where I would buy the dirty water half smokes from the vendors, little mustard and a touch of minced onion, sometimes relish instead. The preparation was kind of lame but the dog itself transcended that. I am not sure who made the DC vendor half smokes (they all used a single source, I think) back in the 1980’s but it was a pretty good dog. I bet it would have been even better grilled.
Uh, yes. Every package I’ve ever bought says something like ‘fully cooked, ready to eat.’ Even wieners bought unpackaged at a meat market or butcher shop, too.
Do you eat them straight outta the package or heat them up at all?
Did my yearly Costco run with my sisters, they both have memberships I don’t, so I always have to get the $1.50 glizzy and pop + some fries and gravy. Unfortunately the dog was kinda lukewarm, but the chips were good.
Whoa. The Sam’s Club hawt dawg only comes with a beverage, no fries.
The fries are extra, but enough for 2-3 ppl
Nope - no bun, no mustard, no mayo, no ketchup, no sauerkraut, no slaw, no kimchi, no hot dog sauce, no chili, etc. It’s about tasting the sausage (or desperate hunger sometimes).
So, just a cold dog straight out of the package. Well, that’s a quick and easy meal.
Been thru (Newark) NJ and to (broadcast consultants) in NJ a number of times, but long, long ago. Knew nothing of NJ hot dogs (or delis) back then and consultants always wanted to take us to fine dining. Wish I hadda known. I’m envious of your childhood
.
My husband grew up eating them cold out of the package - it was a favorite snack in his household. I can do just-heated-through but a cold dog…shudder.
Yeah, that’s a hard no from me.
my roommate in college used to eat Spam straight out of the can
hard pass for me
Not to yuck anyone’s yum, but…nope.
He also used to eat butter sandwiches.
Two slices of white bread and butter, just butter. (And, fwiw, butter “removed” from the tableside condiment tray at Denny’s).
Ah, to be young and poor again.
