Hot Dogs!

WalMart Online has been stuffing my pantry since the pandemic. It is way cheaper than the local supermarket… shipping for orders over $35 is usually free, most stuff is delivered within 2 days, and customer service has been exemplary for anything that didn’t show up as expected (usually being replaced or refunded with no returns required).

Haven’t gone through the whole thread but will.
My favorite is the Heritage Berkshire Kurobuta Pork Hot Dog in Sheep Casing.
I love it plain on a bun. So much flavor.

My recent hot dog experience was at an outlet mall and wanted a couple. $12 for 2 at Nathan’s. Hard pass.

I think I mentioned above I was looking for e replacement for the Miller’s dogs I usually buy (looking for something a little less dense and a bit more snappy).

I am thinking of Caspars as it is the only dog in the local Safeway that is pork and beef in a natural casing. Everything else appears to be skinless, 100% beef.

Anyone try these? Thoughts?

From Yelp: outrageous hot dogs. For me this goes under the heading of just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should, but I thought some people might enjoy it! :hotdog: :grinning:

I understand completely. I am usually mustard and onions only. But we have a bottle of Sriracha ketchup, and it is just dangerously delicious. I think it is superb with Tater Tots.

I remember growing up our neighbors ran an Orange Julius that was walking distance from our house. My favs were their chili dog and something they called the Pickle Pooch, which was just mustard on one side and sliced dill pickles sandwiched between the dog/bun on the other (which I usually asked for chopped onions on). Now-a-days I do one with either Clausen dill pickles or Tony Packo’s B&B slices, depending on whether I want dill or sweet.

Pickle slices down one side, and mustard on the other, with onions in the middle provides amazing texture and variance of flavor.

Mount Olive organic uses sugar!

Never seen it at the local Safeway.

It is just starting to show up here.

Actually, it is “Caspers”… and just had one for lunch (steamed for about 7 minutes - then uncovered with a couple of chopsticks across the top to steam the bun for a couple of more minutes).

This is decidedly a street cart/stand hot dog. Long (about 9-10 inches), seriously snappy, a lighter texture than most 100% beef skinless supermarket dogs, amazing color (almost red), and a nice smokiness. Hard to complain about anything other than it is a little light on the “spice” side of things. For instance, if I was making something like franks & beans I’d go with something like the Miller’s. But on a fully dressed hot dog in a bun the flavor and texture are great (I made mine with mustard, onions, and B&B pickle chips - but think these would also be amazing on a chili or Chicago dog).

Unfortunately their online ordering site has been suspended for quite some time, so unless you’re near the west coast these will probably not be available to you.

Have you tried Alpine Meats hot dogs? They’re the official supplier to the SF Giants, and I’m pretty sure they sell natural casing dogs. I’ve seen Alpine dogs in my local Safeway, so if even if yours doesn’t carry them currently, you might be able to convince them to stock them on a trial basis.

I want the 45-pound pail of herring in “wine sauce”. Nah, give me two.

Interesting!

Just an aside - not sure the author should get away with this statement unsupported: “American Jews have successfully integrated into their society more than any other in history. So too, the hot dog has transcended its humble New York Jewish immigrant roots to enter the pantheon of true American icons.”

More successfully integrated than Jews in other contexts? Or than other minorities in American society? It’s not totally clear. I guess this is off topic though.
