Hot Dog Buns??

Grocery store websites don’t list all products that are in-store. So those of us who use such sites to make our own shopping lists know to still look for some items that might seem to be unavailable the next time we shop in-person. If ordering online for pickup (or delivery) from the grocery store if an item isn’t shown you typically have a blank spot where you can request it and it will be added to your order if they stock it.

I’ve had a few of the Sara Lee Artesano products and have been pretty satisfied with them. Haven’t tried the brioche hot dog buns, but I haven’t had hot dogs in a while, and I think I’ll get those buns next time I do.

Thanks. I guess I think I’ve seen something like that but never used it–my impression being that they could have something transferred to a brick-and-motor pick-up store (or delivered to your home) after some short delay. I guess I wondered if some parts of the country feature little sites where ALL one does is pick up or return things rather than shop.

Funny you should mention this… I made hot dogs for lunch yesterday and the buns were “disappointing”.
Sunshine mentioned the breading I used for my bread wrapped sweet potatoes was much better.
So it got me thinking, why not cook the hot dogs to almost done, wrapped them in my home made “bread wrapping” dough and give them a quick air fry.
I have extra dough made up in the freezer in individual portions. I’m wondering if this might work?? I don’t see why not…
Picture a hot dog in the center of these vs. sweet potatoes… I guess this is literally “food for thought”.

I imagine I could add onions and mustard inside the wrap, prior to air frying??

I actually think the Trader Joe’s hot dog buns are decent and sturdy. They’re sliced from the top rather than the side, which makes them hold up a bit better to various toppings and not rip right down the seam.

Based on a little more research last night and what is available at the local Safeway… before adding hours to the process of whipping up a hot dog I am gonna give King’s Hawaiian a try.

I luv the fact it is still run by the original family, ratings are predominantly high, it is on a number “top/best” lists, and Kathy Fang noted on Food Network: “I personally love it when the bun wraps around the hot dog. Don’t skimp and get just any hot dog buns — most are tasteless and toast up like cardboard when you toss them on the grill. King’s Hawaiian has this beautiful sweet and slightly yeasty flavor to them. They’re super soft and buttery even when grilled.”

Will try and pick some up tomorrow and report back.

I’ve bought the Pretzilla sausage buns at Safeway and liked them. Do they have them where you are?

They do! But they look really small… how long are they?

In school we called these Pronto Pups or Wiener Winks.

When I make them at home, I don’t pre-cook the dogs, and use biscuit dough. I bake the dough-wrapped dogs in an oven, same time and temp as for a biscuit.

I would add the ketchup and mustard after baking.

Could you please share your favorite recipe for making your own? I’ve started making my own hamburger buns, and wonder (likely) if that recipe could be adapted for hot dog buns, too.

I’ll second the Arnold or Pepperidge Farm New England style buns. I only use NE style split to buns, so I’ll use whatever store brand I can find too. I don’t know how popular NE style buns are elsewhere so not sure what other national brands offer.

HoJo’s hot dogs were always served in a top-split bun!
