Hong Kong 2024 -- First Visit

I love crab.

Would have been interesting to eat this variety there, but I’ll have to satisfy myself with the delicious ones here (in Mumbai) instead :joy:

We also didn’t eat any whole fish (bec there were some “queasy” folks) but that can also be easily remedied here.

Before my wife moved to the States, she’d fly to HK in season to indulge in the famous Shanghai Mitten Crab. Seems a rather extravagant expense, but mitten crab is so costly in Taiwan to almost justify the travel expense.

The mitten crab should be hitting the markets and restaurants here soon, hopefully before we leave in a week.

We’ve seen many crabs in markets here, flower crabs and others.

Full of roe and ready to go.

If cannot get a place at The Chairman, you can savour the same dish at ’ Tasting Court, Happy Valley '. Ex-Chairman chef and staff using same 25 year old vintage Xiao Shing wine. Easier to secure a place?!

Stopped by Tasty Congee in IFC today at the odd hour of 5pm, and decided to order up the rice noodle rolls filled with twisted cruller 香脆油條腸粉 - popularly known as ‘zha leung’ 炸兩. I had been complaining that these days they’re not crunchy enough, and it remained the case this time. The crullers weren’t fried to order like the old days, so while they weren’t completely limp and soggy - they still had some crunch, especially the end cuts - I still miss the ones I used to have when the entire length was crunchy and hot enough to blister the roof of my mouth. Oh well.

Do you think they’re fried fresh at peak time and you got what was left from lunch?

(And as @THECHARLES said before, if you come visit us in nyc or toronto, we can remedy this deficit for you  )

7am sights at HKG.

I was too sleepy to eat, but it didn’t seem to stop anyone else, every food outlet was hopping.

I was a bit sad that only breakfast menu items were available bec I wanted char siu and goose for the flight, so I “made do” with wontons and noodles from Tasty along with golden mushroom and beef cheung fun. Almost got the brisket noodles pictured, but then I wanted wantun again!

Interesting that dim sum pricing is the same as in my NYC neighborhood (which I consider expensive, and these were 3 pc per basket not 4) $8-10.

@damiano the lady at Tasty helped me finish the balance on my Octopus card and used up all my change too :joy:.

Good that they have these options at the airport inside the gates but definitely expensive for what it is

I thought the pricing was equivalent outside the airport for the same quality, actually.

(In the US it’s common to have high pricing for mediocre product inside the airport.)
