Good Hong Kong eats 2024-25

Really? I am from HK and have never heard this before. At noodle shop and casual places, of course! But white table cloth restaurants?

agree with Daniel. Definitely not something locals do at nice establishments. But maybe tourists do that…

Upon further thought, I respectfully retract my misleading assertion.

We’d grabbed a few dishes at places with tablecloths, white or otherwise. These were not establishments that can be categorized as White Tablecloth Restaurants. My error.

I notice a few locals in this thread: wouldn’t it be great if we could have an ongoing eating in HK thread?? Just to get a pulse of what’s currently hot and happening. Blatant self interest of course, as there is a chance I’ll be visiting HK again within the next 3-6 months… This thread is hopefully becoming a proxy for that, which is great.

Maybe I can already ask a question. I noticed that there are far less Cantonese restaurants these days with live fish tanks, compared to say a decade ago. I remember going to one near the Wan Chai basketball court back then, on a higher floor in a building. Forgot the name. Is that place still around?

Any other good tips? Preferably a little bit upscale (but not necessarily hotel restaurants).

Fook Lam Moon?

Thanks for thinking along. No, not Fook Lam Moon.

I’d go there as well, back then, enjoying their suckling pig. First time there, I’d wonder why several tables would have a single woman sitting over a meter apart from a larger group, taking care of a baby… Until I figured out that was the live-in nanny! Only saw it at FLM.

No, this was a larger restaurant, and I think the waiter even brought us the live fish to inspect before cooking commenced.

lots of Chinese (and not just Cantonese) restaurants still have live seafood in tanks. Seventh Son and Xinrongji in Wanchai both come to mind.

Only one? That’s nothing. Status in Hong Kong is indicated by the size of the support crew. I have seen one for each kid, or one as the ‘boss’ nanny with the others supporting. They go everywhere, including to international vacations.

Lol! Oh and thanks for creating this new thread.

Does anybody know why the Spring Deer restaurant, Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, has closed down? I used to love going there but on my last visit to the area earlier this year it was permanently closed.
Food there was very good.
Cheers.

There was something called the Covid-19 pandemic…

For everybody’s interest I guess. Go read the comments…

Well done …… and you know that was the reason they closed?

lemme get you the phone number of the owner so you can ask him yourself. I’m sure I have it lying around somewhere…

Do you have any idea how many restaurants - many of them iconic - closed down as a result of the government restrictions on dining as well as the border closure during the 2 1/2 years that tourists weren’t welcome? We sat and watched them disappear one by one.

So, your answer is no?

If all goes as planned, I’ll be spending a week in HK next month. Now, my credit card company is offering me 150 euro (1400 HKD?) off for a lunch/dinner and these are my options below. Which one would you pick?

I was in Man Wah last year and found it disappointing so that one is off limits. Thanks!

I need to get your credit card.

I like Ming Court.

Yes, I was thinking of Ming Court as well. I have been there many times before, while staying at the Cordis Hotel. And we’ll most likely be staying at the Cordis again next month.

Two other places I’m interested in are Xin Rong Yi and One Harbour Road. Anyone been? Seen some pics on insta and both look great.

And as for Yong Fu: I have read that it is a branch of a Shanghai chain, but cannot seem to find the original Shanghai restaurant?

Yes, my credit card! I’m trying out an Amex card, more expensive annually, but comes with a lot of perks plus 100k points as a welcome offer. With the points alone I can book 2 flights to Asia, only needing to pay taxes (around 20% of the fare). That’s already worth more than what I need to pay for the card. Plus I get fast track at our national airport, access to many airport lounges, and 300 euro dinner rewards (150 in my home country and 150 abroad). I’ll try it out for a year, see how it goes.

Xinrongji and Yong Fu would be my top 2 choices. What they’re doing there are far above any Cantonese restaurant on your list. After that maybe Ming Court, Spring Moon, and Above and Beyond.
