yes… that mortadella focaccia at Bar Leone is reason alone to visit, but I’ve been told lines are now insane after winning #1 on A50Best Bars and haven’t been back since

I’ve been craving dim sum ever since you started this thread. :joy:

And I haven’t even posted any dim sum pics yet

Wantun mien today if other people don’t derail me.

Last night’s plan was to bring home roast goose and char siu from Yat Lok, which got derailed by the excessive consumption all afternoon and evening (and then the silly quesadilla and taco consumption by others at COA :woman_facepalming:t2:).

BBQ at home tonight, but maybe I’ll sneak in some goose and char siu on the way back from the musuem

We didn’t have a wait at all at Bar Leone, and our COA wait was while we were at Leone. Even though we were a big group, which was kind of miraculous. But there were people waiting outside when we left Leone, not a crazy line though, bec it was a weekday.

It was pretty unanimous that COA was the group favorite, though. The bites at Leone were better, and I’m not a big tequila / mezcal drinker so I preferred my coffee cocktail at Leone too, but the ambience, service, and the rest of the drinks at COA were all much better.

Tasty Congee and Wonton today for wantun mien.

Oof delicious!

A few people decided to join me, so we ended up ordering a bunch more things to share — fish ball congee, fried noodles (chow fun but skinny) with pork, garlic “kale” (aka chinese broccoli / yu choy), you tiao cheung fun, and fried wontons (rogue order).

My first time trying congee, and it was wonderful! Reminded me of an Indian millet porridge (I’ve never eaten kanji either, which is what congee originally derives from).

The wontons of course were fabulous. Soup was incredibly flavorful, and the noodles were skinny and delicate with a lovely chew. (@vinouspleasure the wontons were 2 bites vs the jumbos we ate, but the jumbos were as good as these imo).

They served a chilli sauce that was also superb - reminded me of Tibetan 2 Nepali momo chutney (as agreed by 2 Nepali friends at the meal).

We were in Kowloon for M+ (fabulous but exhausting, and with a fantastic retrospective of IM Pei) so I convinced the others to swing by Temple Street Night Market for a short wander before we got chased home by a combination of rain clouds and exhaustion.

Finally some egg tarts — these are from Bakehouse.

Dinner was bbq at home, dessert was Messina gelato that was ridiculously delicious! 4 flavors, dulce de leche always has my heart (and mouth).

That is fabulous looking “ja/za leung” (phonetic transliteration here). Even with the best of HK style dim sum in the US, it is always amazing to see how translucent and thin the HK pros can get that rice noodle wrapping.

Wow temple street has changed a lot

One of my favorites for WTM and IMO , overlooked by lots of people who liked to head over to 1* Ho Hung Kee!
Also, loved their ’ loaded with wok-hay and greaseless ’ Gone-Chau-Ngau-Ho…so smokey and caramelized…as reflected by your posting. :+1: :yum: :ok_hand:

Haven’t been to Hong Kong for years. But when we were there, we loved the food.

Compared to a decade ago, Temple street is now less crowded.

Back then there were dozens of restaurants where you could sit outside and eat, with many crab restaurants. And it was always crowded, even well into the late hours. Now there are maybe a handful sit outside and eat restaurants left.

HK is just becoming more sanitised, what with neon lights being removed and dai pai dong licenses not being extended anymore. Yes, it’s a shame but it’s only going to get worse ten years from now, so enjoy HK while you can.

sadly the standards in HK have gone downhill, and it is difficult to find ja leung where the yao ja kwai is fried to order. It’s no longer fresh and crunchy at either Tasty’s in IFC or Ho Hung Kee, and even at Tasty’s in Happy Valley it was only about 1/4 crunchy on my last visit last year. I still order it whenever I go to any of the above outlets in the hope of one day getting it fresh, but haven’t had a fully-crunchy one in a few years…

Thai street food from Samsen - another delicious meal.

Crab fried rice, crab omelette, prawn pad thai, wagyu fried rice, morning glory, mango sticky rice, young coconut ice cream. 4 orders of each to kick off our weekend of celebration.

Nice pick Samsen, you and your friends know all the popular spots! Never been because there is always a long line of people waiting for a table. At least the Sheung Wan spot.
