Reading through the comments in the recipe, it seems that folks have had a bit more success if:

They use commercial processed peanut butter (JIF, Skippy) rather than a natural style. The additional sugar supposedly gives a better contrast to the peanut coating and the emulsifiers/stabilizers help with the dough binding together.

They add an additional egg to the dough to keep the dough less crumbly.

They chop the peanuts to a medium, rather than a coarse or near-whole consistency, which aids in adhesion.

Beautiful! It’s been years since I tasted one of these.

Growing up, our Christmases were built around Czech/Slovak traditions. My grandmother’s dining room table was covered in the poppyseed rolls, nut rolls, and lekvar (prune butter) rolls that she would bake for family and friends. But mostly, it was the poppyseed rolls. IYKYK :grin:

These lavender shortbreads with lemon curd are good! I was afraid they would be too heavy on the lavender, but it was perfect .

I called Zuni SF about their Christmas Cookies for sale.

Were you able to get that green colour.

People who receive cookies regularly from us dont realize what they would have to pay if bought in a store.

Just out of the oven. Smells great. Looks like this now but I have a feeling it might sink in the middle as it cools.

Need to wait a few hours before cutting and trying it.

I think some people do!

I paid a home baker to drop off a fruitcake and squares West of Edmonton last Christmas and it cost me about $100.
That was a home based business run by a young mom.

2 fruitcakes delivered by another baker in Red Deer, that were delivered to Calgary cost me around $100, which included delivery . That one was a bigger operation with a website, and probably made in a commercial kitchen. That bakery is in the craft show circuit

I decided to make my own fruitcakes this year. I didn’t keep track of costs since I already have a lot of fruit and nuts on hand. I’m guessing each 2 lb fruitcake would be costing me $20-$25 in ingredients, and it costs me $25 to mail them out west.

I guess it’s people who don’t buy other people good quality baking who also don’t appreciate good home baking that is gifted.

My local coffee shop’s cookie box with cookies that are probably a little better than mine, has been costing around $25 for 12 cookies the last couple years.

I like trying new stuff so I give some store bought, bakery-bought and home-made baked goods at Xmas.
