HO Dinner 9/12/24 at El Rey Del Pescado

small_h & I are arranging an HO Dinner at El Rey Del Pescado https://www.thekingoffish.net/ next Thursday Sept 12th, probably at 7pm. It’s located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and is pretty easy to get to by train. Let us know if you’re interested in joining us.

Unfortunately we will be away.

Am I reading the menu right? It looks like they only offer the fish dishes or larger plates on the weekend altho all of the other dishes from tacos and aguachiles to soup look real good! we are provisionally interested if back from New England in time.

You are correct, although i wouldn’t be surprised if some of the weekend plates were available. However, as you note, there’s a very large & appetizing non-weekend menu that should carry us thru. :taco:

Still away…but not sorry!

I am still in - @JenKalb ? @DaveCook ? Other people? @Ike ?

Too far to join, but look forward to pics!

I’m in.

Woot!

Woot for me, too.

Woots for everybody!

Still up north remains to be seen, still sounds good!

Hope you can make it!

Sorry to miss a no-pork dinner. I’ll be somewhere over the Arctic then. I get in on Friday morning.

Sorry you cant make it, ElJefe. Same goes for you Ninkat, saregama & vinouspleasure.
Jen: hope you can make it.
I made a reservation under “Steve” (using my imagination to come up with that) for 5 of us (me, Ginny, small_h, Dave & Ike) but told them that we might be 7. He seemed fine with it. So, Thurs 7pm. See you there.

There’s a lot to like about this place. The space was a lot fancier than I expected, which is to say the floor was not linoleum and there was a lot of space between tables. We had a sort of VIP setup up in the back, separated from the rest of the narrow dining room by a little railing.

A strong start, these crab claws with butter and garlic, served with both homemade chips and soft bread (the latter was more useful for butter dredging).

A selection of empanadas, fish and shrimp, I think. Nice and crisp, but still a little too “fry” - this became a theme.

Aguachile with fish and shrimp. This was one of my favorite dishes - quite spicy, and the shrimp was just barely cooked, so the texture was reminiscent of botan ebi.

This dramatic whole snapper, continuing the fry theme. And a sleeper hit, rice with “calamary” ink. I could’ve eaten a quart of this.

Guac & chips, tacos and tostadas. By this time, I had palate fatigue. Too much fry, too much sauce.

But this giant michelada saved me.

All in all, some hits, some near-hits, and as always, great to see everyone!

Looks good!

How did the food compare to Mariscos el submarino?

I missed the Mariscos dinner, so I can’t say. I hope to get there one day.

I will also add that the service at King was very good. The plates were weird (like small metal cafeteria trays), and I was surprised that the lobster tacos were so buttery. Butter on Mexican food seems odd to me.

The seafood was more abundant at Mariscos el Submarino, or at least more evident, and the flavors were more forthright and varied.
