Union has sealed up their patio.
I’m a little disappointed, to be honest. It was as the only heated patio I had found that had good food and good ventilation. I will update the CO2 over brunch
Pleasantly surprised that the back patio at Union had good ventilation (CO2 under 800) throughout our hour long brunch.
Swiss Train Ride (a Croque ) My friend had the Rib Benny.
By The Way Café still has a busy heated patio that is enclosed, and ventilated because there are gaps in the enclosure because of a big tree in the middle of their patio and a gap in the back wall. It is open for brunch and lunch, but not dinner.
Hair of the Dog will have a heated patio once the weather is warmer.
Union’s back patio is unfortunately more sealed than ever.
The food at Union continues to be excellent. I will probably switch to take-out until the restaurant takes down their winter walls and plexiglass that seal up the space.
I understand some other customers at Union complained about the draft. It was the one heated patio that has food I like, and used to have good ventilation.
Cafe Diplomatico has open ventilation on their heated patio. Unfortunately, the food is fair.
It looks like Restaurant Pompette is using its patio on warmer days.
Mamakas has tables out and heaters mounted above each outdoor table ready to go. They must be waiting for warm days. Understandably, their patio has heaters but no walls, so it won’t make sense until it’s 12 ⁰ C or warmer. I don’t even know how much sense those heaters without walls make on cold days.
I am going to keep this thread going for fall, winter and spring 2024-2025, since it seems to be mostly me sticking to ventilated or chilly patios when the temps dip below 15 degrees C.
I probably won’t be visiting Union on Ossington as a dine -in customer this winter, because the back patio has been sealed tight to keep some other customers cozier. Some customers had complained about drafts. Well, now the sealed back patio has CO2 values that are the same as a small restaurant with mediocre ventilation. I have probably dined at Union a dozen times in the past 4 years. Not a lot, but probably more times than the customer who complained about the draft. Oh, also, I tip well relative to your average Jane. I will still get take-out from Union. I appreciate they still will do take-out, as will Enoteca Sociale and Viaggio. Martine’s was undecided about take-out when I asked a few weeks ago. Henry’s won’t do take-out.
I am frustrated, as someone who has to avoid catching bugs, that there don’t seem to be restaurants with both good food and good ventilation, unless the restaurant is almost empty due to the day or time of day.
I get it from a business perspective. I’m not expecting restaurants to spend money heating outdoor patios like some attempted to do in the fall and winter of 2020, 2021 and 2022. I’m not asking servers to come outside when it’s freezing.
I want a little ventilated space available for people like me, until the snow flies.
Bar Raval has its sheeting up around the majority of their patio now, with a few tables in front of the restaurant that are not covered , and exposed.
The Duke of York had its heated patio open last night (Mon, Oct 28, 2024).
They also have a cover that can be pulled across the back. It was quite chilly even with the heater on, with the weather being damp, the temp being around 10 degrees C.
The menu is smaller than it once was. I’m attempting to be sensible in terms of less complex carbs and less fried food. I went with the chicken curry with rice and naan ($22.99 before tax), which was closer to Carribean than Indian chicken curry. I liked it.
I’ve also ordered their wings, burgers, Cobb salad, chicken pot pie, fish and chips, and English breakfast (served all day) on other visits previously.
A quick stroll across Little Italy on College Street this morning. The Café Diplomatico patio is heated. The walls are up around most of it. The front 4 tables have more ventilation.
I think most people head to the Dip’s patio to watch soccer and other games. I believe the patio is an option all day.
There are still a few holdouts. We sat on the patio at Wynona last week. Tonight we’ll be on the patio at Bar Vendetta. Foxley is still seating in their backyard patio tonight according to their email reply.
Thank you so much for this thread! I’ve been looking for something like this as I, too, am still trying to avoid bugs as best I can, but still have a little fun along the way. I’ll add Chadwicks and Greater Good Bar to this list. I haven’t visited Greater Good lately, but they typically have a good heated side patio that they keep open until it gets super cold. If the heat’s not on, the bar tender is usually happy to put it on for you. The food available is North of Brooklyn pizza.
They don’t do much, when they are working, to be honest. I consider it a bit of a waste of energy to use the tiny ones, once it’s really cold. They only really warm your head and hands, when it’s under 5 degrees, imo.
Today, around 1 pm, at Krave.
On a sunny 8⁰C day, I was happy to see the following places had their patios open and people were sitting on them.
Intersteer Tavern on Roncesvalles.
I liked the sauerkraut and mushroom pierogis.
They have a back patio as well, which was open.
