[Hangzhou, China] Longjing Wholesale 龙井批发(茶厂直营)

Not a restaurant, but a highly rated wholesale dragon well tea shop in Hangzhou that also double as a retail store. Because they are a wholesaler, they have direct relationship with the tea farmers. If you wonder if you are getting ripped off by tea vendors in the touristy Longjing Village, which is by the famed Longjing growing area, or need help telling good dragon well tea from average ones, just come here instead. You will get quality tea at a fair price.

Nice space to enjoy a sample cup of dragon well tea and get educated by the proprietress on everything about the tea, which was, of course, well famous, and had been enjoyed by emperors and presidents from the past.

Friendly and knowledgeable owner.

Various grade of tea, from the economical to the rarified.

If you look at the three rows of leaves on the table. Top was the top leaves, greenest, youngest and picked earliest. Bottom was from late in the picking season, about a month after the top.

I bought so much tea, much of them originally intended for gifting. But after I found out customs from other countries often return these tea, I ended up keeping most of them for myself. I am still drinking them, but need to hurry before the end of the year when the tea starts to get a little old.

I didn’t buy the most expensive ones, at 2800 RMB/ catty. But I got quite a lot of the 1600 RMB/ catty. Once I get used to that level of tea, admittedly its a bit hard to go back to more modest ones. I did get some sample of the 2800 RMB/ catty leaves from the owner, enough to make a cup. Those were, naturally, the best quality leaves in the shop.

Did you ever find the berry that you asked about last year?

We finally got some, these are Hawthorn Berries, in English?

Didn’t particularly care for the ones we tried last night. Almost mealy, with no snap or crispness. Didn’t recognize the fruit under the Chinese name, now recall that I’ve had Hawthorn before in at least one prep.

In Beijing, app for a Peking Duck dinner.

Its a different type though. I think the one I was referring to was yang mei, or Chinese bayberry, which looked like this golf ball size fruit with a textured skin. I ended up eating twice on this trip.

Gotcha. Will keep looking. Interested in trying it.

The season is just late May to June, so I think its probably not likely to find it now.
